UPDATE: I spent much of Saturday struggling to get to grips with the eject mechanism that had been baffling me totally. I had to sort of go right back to the beginning and look at it afresh. I started by making sure which way the motor spins and then the direction of the cogs that allow the insert/eject mechanism to do its thing. So, now I find by manually turning the reel in the corresponding direction, the cassette tray gradually lowers itself down. Not sure yet how it locks but it does lock.
The motor has been struggling to do this job. Power went dead and I finally traced the problem to a blown inline fuse rated at 1.25 Amp. For some reason I had a hell of a job getting the fuse out of the plastic holder. I now have 2 spare 1 amp fuses.
I think I've stepped back from the idea the transistor was faulty. I've seen the motor try to pull the tray downwards and it does still engage with the driven cog.
My course of action now is to remove the old grease where it's flaked in some areas and re-grease. Also to clean the pinch roller a lot more and the heads and everything I can get at. And to try and ease up the eject/insert mechanism.
This hasn't been easy. I wish there was a good book on car cassette players that tackles eject mechanisms.
On Sunday I rigged up my Satellite Car Cassette player and was listening to Sgt Pepper on it. This has a manual insert and eject system and is probably older than the Pye.
