Geordie, I'd love to add your 902A to my dating list. When you are next around its backside could you note  the chassis numbers for the TRF and Timebase and the Power Supply if you can see the number and the little white serial plate number.

I can just about remember seeing that 902 down at Gerry Wells' museum. That would have been back around 1986/7. ISTR it was working, though not terribly well.

I misunderstood Geordie's post and thought it was a 902A that he has but I see it is in fact a 902.

Hi Jeffrey,
             the 902 has received a lot of attention since I acquired the set way back in 1988.   The first unit to receive attention was the all band radio.   A new four position function switch was made to replace the rather flimsy arrangement that was made for a radio chassis which was one that was most likely sourced from a table radio set. The new switch assembly was made to resemble the original part.
A much better TRF and timebase chassis was found to replace the rather comprimised unit the set came with.
More recently the K3 record player was replaced with a much better one.
So over the time the I've owned the set it has been worked on in order to bring it up to the original state as it left the factory in 1937.

902A Hi Peter, I don't own one but just added the extra information about the direct view model.  The 12" "onion tube" as EMI called it was also used in studio monitors. First set to employ the KT44 line output valve.  

Attachment shows the serial number plate on the 902.

Geordie, That's an unusual serial plate with a very different number format.
For example the MBL set has a plate very similar to most of the other EMI sets.

   

That said there were number references in the MBL set that were of similar format to your's in chalk on the inside of the side panels and also on the EHT can.

That's certainly the same number type. The Q prefix makes me think of "quality" and possibly an inspector's mark but that's pure supposition. Geordie's MP prefix reminded me of references we used in HP where lab prototypes and manufacturing prototypes were numbered but we never shipped any prototypes except for early evaluation.

I suppose that's a fair price. Not many available Nor many people who would want one. Wouldn't be on my wish list.

But what a piece of engineering! And looks good too, a super piece of furniture. Definitely would have trumped almost anything else at the time. What a shame it became out-of-date so quick.

Fair price, if I wanted it, I'd buy it! All there, pretty good condition, a lot of work to make it 'go' but all do-able.
