Blu-ray DVD wireless help required please.

Just got home from a fantastic sell-out stage production of Oklahoma to find a message on our answerphone from Colin to relay the happy news that at last, his phone is back on, his wi-fi is sorted, and everything is now tickety boo. You got there in the end Colin, so can dedicate your weekend to the Lorch project!

(Last time we saw Oklahoma was the film, in May 1960 on our first date. Strewth - where did 54 years go?!!!)

Many thanks Lawrence for explaining PLT and SWL's. It's possible given the nature of this forum most other members would recognize these without a second thought but I'm mechanical man so many such abbreviations regarding electrical work go straight over my head; I am however up to speed on using a big hammer.

Thanks David; yes it is brilliant to finally put this problem to bed allowing me to get on with my life. Hopefully I can settle down to the Lorch restoration but this morning it's very cold here so I'll wander into the garage a bit later. I'm pleased you enjoyed Oklahoma and agree with you when you say where did 54 years go?

Regarding the TP-LINK I bought last night Refugee a very strange thing happened to me at around 10 o'clock. I was kneeling by the Blu-ray disc player with the remote in my hand and completely lost the plot; I didn't know what I was doing in every sense of the word; I completely lost it? It was bizarre; I felt very strange indeed; then I asked Bron what I was going to do and she replied "you are removing the DVD from the player". then as if I had pressed my personal reset button I was normal once again but now I was suddenly very focused.

Normally I'm tired and ready for bed at that time of night but I suddenly got the urge to have a go with the Wi-Fi? The Virgin Media technician yesterday told me before he even installed the new router that sometimes the Wi-Fi can be tricky to set up; he connected everything and tried a number of times to connect the TV via Wi-Fi without success; the network was being displayed and everything else looked in order so he said play around with it but he also suggested using the wall plugs saying this would guarantee a good TV reception which I accepted; I've never been keen on people doing everything for me because I like to learn; he left me his contact details just in case of further problems so it wasn't a case of him trying top get away as quickly as possible.

I had been watching the technician whilst he was setting everything up and it must have registered with me and as I say I was now very focused; within a few minutes I had a message on the TV saying you have two minutes to press ? on the router; the router is located in darkness under my desk so a dash for the torch and I could not see the button on the router I was supposed to press; in fact no buttons at all; then I noticed one side had a strip with three logos so out of curiosity I pressed this and it moved so perhaps this strip was the button?

Suddenly the TV was Wi-Fi connected; WOW that was easy even for me so then I played around for an hour viewing furniture making videos on YouTube (Hands Cavan) then watched John Lennon's Imagine and finally found The Tommy Cooper show; as we watched Tommy the picture froze a number of times and was breaking up so I'll retain these wall plugs as a back up. I presume APPS are applications and a set of these were downloaded being programs like Netflix? I'm completely new to all this so it's a steep learning curve for me hence I'm trying to share my experiences because others will no doubt face exactly the same difficulties once they try Wi-Fi for the first time. Going to bed I felt very pleased but I'll never forget the feeling whilst I was kneeling down with the remote and losing the plot; it was only a few seconds but seconds free of interruptions?

I was up at 4am this morning with terrific pain in my right elbow once again; this is compounded by me sleeping on my right side; once up it eases; it can be troublesome whilst I work in the garage but not prevent me working; it's terrible though as I get out of bed so with my elbow problem and the constant fight with the weather my Lorch restoration is somewhat of a major challenge. I'm still breathing so the Lorch restoration is still ongoing.

Things are looking up?

That pain in your elbow is a reminder, Col - ease up until it goes. That's what it is trying to tell you. A few years back an old neighbour of ours, who was a retired greenkeeper at the local golf club, would always tell me to pace myself as I started each season's gardening. He would watch me start off and tell me to slow down, and when to knock off for a cuppa or a chat. In no way was he annoying, but more to the point, not only was he right but he lengthened the season for me. After that, I never had to abandon jobs due to strains or injuries. Often he would come over with his "magic tools" as he called them, to help me with various tasks and planting out.

Congratulations for keeping up with the technology - RTFM* always works eventually!

Um! don't understand how it works? The TV isn't Smart so presumably you are getting web stuff to it via the Blue Ray recorder that is? As suggested by Colin 2.

Who wants to watch the Web on TV anyway? Certainly not me.

No problem with the acronyms Col, PLT is just one of several acronyms that generally mean data transmission via a power line.
I don't know how immune those devices are to other sources of power line transmissions or power line interference such as spikes/pulses from normal household electrical items.

I suspect that some don't comply to the current regulations regarding interference, if those were to to proliferate I can see the day coming when neighbour wars might break out.

Fortunately we don't need them with our set up, the data from our BT wifi box seems to reach all parts of the house.

Thanks for your concern Colin. Yes I think I do need to slow down before I do some long lasting damage to myself but every time I want to ease off something crops up then I'm working flat out again. The Lorch restoration should have been both easy and a pleasure for me after all this is something I can do knowing I'll succeed but it has been surprisingly heavy; blasting the heavy castings then blowing on the paint have taken their toll on my elbow; I'm built like a stick insect which does not help. Just knocked off to investigate why our door chimes were sounding? No one at either door but I noticed our neighbour's garage door closing; still no let up with interruptions?

Prolonged hand work on the Lorch items hasn't helped due to masses of rubbing down. I was going to wander into the garage today; my elbow eases off whilst I work but I sure do suffer later whilst in bed.

Perhaps a session playing with the Wi-Fi is in order for today but I always feel uneasy knowing I have other jobs lined up which I would like to tackle. Strange how the gale force wind has dropped now I don't want to spray paint?

The poor Virgin Media technician caught full force of my personal black cloud yesterday; the rain was lashing down whilst he was here in fact I thought a usual day for me to get my compressor and spray gun out?

I'm actually enjoying great entertainment. I switched on our all singing all dancing TV and settled down to watch Alex Snodgrass's bandsaw video on YouTube (yes I'm sad). Nicely into it I answered the door to find Dale our postman who kindly handed me a package. This was the two new DVD's I had ordered from Moviemail.com. Great two good movies to watch tonight? Bron opened the package asking if I had ordered two copies of Philomena? No I thought I had ordered one copy plus a copy of Quartet?

Drat it just another couple of clicks of the big key in my back. The way things are going I'll say this is entirely my mistake; I've just emailed Moviemail who accept returns asking to do an exchange for one of the Philomena's. Everything is normal? Now where's that desert island?

Sit back, put your feet up and watch a few lathe and bandsaw videos. Oh, and have a piece of fruitcake and a nice cuppa Yorkshire tea. Your personal sunshine will return, despite what the weather and fate throws at you.

You can tell that I have just done that, excepting the detail on the videos - mine was a boxed set of how they have rebuilt XH558, the sole flying Vulcan. It is almost ready to fly this season's circuit of airshows after a quite major service and modification programme this winter.

Off this afternoon to brighten up my sister's afternoon and reset her care-call alarm - something the "official system" is supposed to do and fails time after time. It has been inoperative now for 5 days. Hence the need for me to monitor my landline and mobile phone constantly. Local care services and social service support here is abysmal - many staff "only work 2 days a week" as they have other jobs!!!! I even looked at building a "care suite" (disabled-adapted room and wet room) onto our bungalow with my own capital and then relying on care services to help us support my sister. Despite my wife and I being in our mid-60s, we would get NO support because then my sister would be in what they class as "family care". Apparently, it has been that way (locally?) for at least 15 years.
