Blu-ray DVD wireless help required please.

Hi,

Having been a dinosaur for so long modern technology really does hurt?

I need help once again from you experts please and treat me like as if I'm totally thick. Over the last few days Bron and I have bought brand new Samsung UE32F40 LED TV and Samsung Blu-ray disc player BD-F6500 now I find I'm into a foreign language of networks and wi-fi etc.

I've got the TV and DVD connected via HDMI cable which meant a second trip to Curry's because our old scart cable is now redundant.

I'd like to use wireless network but haven't a clue how to set up a network connection; I've tried and only yesterday after a lot of wasted time thought I needed to buy a "Samsung dongle at £35" so I visited Curry's again yesterday and none in stock but we can order etc.

PAUSE; as usual here's another concentration shatter-er; our lovely neighbour Carole has just visited to ask for my assistance; her cat Max had brought a little field mouse into her bungalow and she couldn't catch the mouse so after a bit of fun the little mouse has been placed still alive right at the top of our garden out of harms way.

Now back to plot. Last night I sent a message to an eBay seller of these dongles quoting the TV and DVD player details and he very kindly replied thus;

I don't think that the F4000 series Samsung TV have any Smart TV or Internet TV features, so even if the adapter works you will not get any benefit.
Your BD-F6500 should be wifi-capable already and you don't need an adapter as far as I know.

What do I need to do please in order to view things like YouTube and lots of free programs?

We are so far delighted with the TV and DVD and now would like to take full advantage of what is on offer; by the way we are on Virgin Media cable with no BT phone line if this makes any difference.

Joe very kindly supplied me the Virgin IP which is 96.2.81.168 but so far I'm stuck and would like to sort this out allowing me to try to crack on with the Lorch restoration?

Both our previous TV and DVD players were over ten years old so this is my starting point.

Have you got a Wi-Fi adaptor in your computer? You won't get anywhere without.

I'd expect a PC as new as yours to have an HDMI outlet, and if so, you could plug it direct into the television.

I've now had a look at the TV's spec and I can't see how it'd work wirelessly either. It looks like the USB port is just for playing stuff off memory sticks or external hard drives. At least this would save burning things to DVD to watch.

Connecting the PC to the DVD player would be like fitting wheels to a tomato: time-consuming, difficult and completely pointless.

Recently installed a Panasonic blue ray burner / recorder, with built in wifi. Just told the unit that the wireless box would automatically assign a DCHP address, put in the details of the wireless box security number and all was good.

Thanks Joe; I could easily connect the PC but I don't think this is the way to go either? I don't want to be running new cables either.

Many thanks Colin for the link. Here's where I've so far got to in the usual way things work for me. Open link; too much to memorize; monitor in one room TV/DVD in another room so no problem just print off the instructions. Start by receiving warning BL ink cartridge wants replacing; first time I've done this with the new Canon MG 6250 printer so set about finding access to cartridges; OK new cartridge installed now new idiot message saying doesn't recognize compatible cartridge so this is common ground because I hate printers. Give up trying to print in disgust and ignore printer; put everything back onto desk and tidy up returning back to something resembling normal.

Where's my slate and chalk got to so that I can now do this the old fashioned way?

I'm working at it Colin but please don't hold your breath because I'm sure I have lots of other black holes to fall into and the Lorch restoration is put on hold once again.

Thanks ed; OK I already said I was thick; wireless box; DCHP address and wireless box security number? This might become clear once I finally reach the TV/DVD but first a bit of long hand to get me started which might take a while?

it would help establishing if it is wifi capable.

Hi,

I'm still here having been fighting the printers for a while. The new unfriendly Canon printer has now been dumped in our front bedroom out of the way; if it doesn't want to help me then it can get lost and I'll sort out the cartridges later. The HP LaserJet 1102w has now been put into service and printed the Samsung sheets off from the link Colin kindly posted so now I've got written instructions and a working printer so a bit of progress?

Thanks Paul; you've really put me through it; the NTL (now Virgin) router is to the rear of my computer desk sitting on the carpet so working a miracle I've finally taken it's picture; re-sized the picture and re-worked the picture using Gimp 2; hope it helps?

Bron has just brought me another pot of tea and I think I'll be drinking a lot more tea before sorting this out? Anyway I'll just go with it because its simply just another learning curve?

Bron and I are still waiting for Virgin Media to sort out our land-line so why do get the feeling I'm going to have to contact Virgin Media now the phone is out of action; smoke signals and email are still options open to me?

The Blu-ray player will search for a network; if SSID broadcasting is disabled; temporarily enabled SSID broadcasting on your router to establish a connection or manual set up to enter your network settings? This goes straight over my head? Best thing to do is to suck it and see?
