Changing from tungsten to LED lamps I save 8 amps. Admittedly that is my total saving but I don't feel tempted to install an Ekco portable. http://www.nostalgiatech.co.uk/LED%20Lighting.htmPeter

Was the coachwork according to choice, eg. Mulliner, Hooper etc.?

Coachwork by H.J. Mulliner.
Hooper made the seven seat limousine. An ideal car to accommodate the Ekco TV receiver. Geordie McBoyne.

Maybe they didn't use a standard AM radio coax? My experience in the the early 1970s was having to swap that coiled core coax on an old car to get any VHF-FM reception. The cassette-Radios and other radios with FM had series loading coils for MW / LW and thus tuned up better on AM too with the cable swapped.
Really very likely a TV coax was installed. Indeed at typical 13V the 8A is closer to two headlamps! Perhaps a mistake. I never heard of 100W each headlamps. I bet more Silver Wraiths are operational than Ekco portables. Also the operational environment is still compatible for a 1955 car, but was turned off in 1985 for the 1955 TVs, which is over 45 years ago. The only trouble was, in 1956 there was nothing to watch while on the way to the important board meeting, except maybe Test Card 'C' and music. However, on the way back, maybe our Captain of Industry could enjoy 'Watch with Mother'... at a quarter-to-four. My grandfather in Sevenoaks in the 1950s obtained a television set, and according to my Mum would sit solemnly through 'Andy Pandy' in the afternoon. Steve

This is scanned from a magazine someone sent me way back in 2014 when i was collecting Ekco information, you can just make out the test card.

That's pretty impressive Freya, thanks for putting it up!
I'm surprised the car isn't a bit more luxurious though... the driver's (chauffeur's?) seat looks a bit plain and on that basis, how much room was there in the back?

That's a really curious photo: if you look carefully there's a lower leg, with a shoe rather uncomfortably positioned under the rear of that "driver's" seat.
I'm fairly sure that one's chauffeur wouldn't have shared the same space as the great and the good. |
