...in January 2007 - a very strange deal. The company went through several iterations and at one point was capitalised at £100M. BT eventually bought it for £67. Their chairman at the time has had a colourful career...

I've been with Plus.net for many years (about 10) since I jumped ship from Demon, but recently they've started to annoy me.

In the next few months I'll be consolidating all our comms (including BB) via BT and moving our web hosting to specialist hosting agencies - it can be more economical to dis-associate hosting from your home/business ISP.

WOW; thanks everyone for taking the time to read my story and to reply.

If I told you the whole story Lawrence I'm sure it would be a two hankie job?

I got out of bed this morning in a lot of pain; I ached and my right elbow was extremely painful not allowing full movement of my right arm; I think I've found a new ailment called Lorch Elbow. Because of nothing but hassle every time I try to spend some quality time in the garage I tend to go mad once I finally do get into the garage so I know the pain I suffer is self inflicted. I was hurting when I added this thread this morning but I wanted to do something rather than simply moan about my lot although I had a fair stab at it through this thread.

I've been reading all your replies and I had hoped that there would be one broadband supplier who really stood out from the rest? At first I thought great; lets go for BT but then you shot this down Colin with poor speed which is a pity but I value your time and effort. Plusnet has been mentioned a number of times but I get the impression they too can be occasionally troublesome? I had considered TalkTalk but because of your views I'll leave TalkTalk well alone; seeing your views about TalkTalk has made posting this thread worthwhile; one thing I do know about this forum and its wide awake members is that I can ask for and receive straight talking replies which are so helpful.

Colin very kindly posted npower CEO's email when I had trouble with npower and this helped a great deal; do I now also contact Richard Branson directly to explain how his company is messing Bron and me around?

I received the following today from Virgin Media and it wound up the big key in my back a bit more especially the sport part?

Sorry; I had to delete the message as it had some detail on such as my email address etc but it was Virgin Media once again trying to get me to upgrade to a bigger bundle with more sport cover; YUKK and double YUKK.

After posting the thread this morning I put on my best clothes and wandered into the garage thinking I'm hurting already so I'll give it something to hurt for and not be a wimp? As I started to lift and drag the heavy lumps of Lorch lathe around I started to ease up and the pain diminished so that by dinner time I was once again feeling a lot better. After dinner fed up with all the hassles around home I took Bron to a craft store just to get away for a while and this worked; when we arrived back home I went straight into the garage and got cracking once again; I'll post on the Lorch thread shortly with today's update but as I type I feel I overcame my problems and have done something useful today; I hope I'm not in for another bad night after today's work out?

Our new neighbour has gone with AOL; I'll ask her why she chose AOL and if she is happy with this company; comments most welcome. Thanks once again everyone for your information; the problem is not yet resolved.

None of the traditional broadband suppliers will give you any better speed than BT, since it their "last mile" of cabling that they will all have to use to get to your house. That leaves Virgin as the only possible, since their cable is already installed and running at a far greater speed than BT-laid cable can do. The speed I got for your area suggests that you are a long way from the exchange. The AOL connection you quote will come through the BT last mile and so won't be any better speed than BT offer.

The 'Last mile' bit is quite amusing. Last year BT installed fibre to our local Box, actually a new one that they installed next to the old one. We upgraded and in due course an 'Openreach Van and Man' turned up and installed the gear, clearly labelled TalkTalk.

Col's area is currently being 'evaluated' according to the Website.

Thanks Colin for your additional information; as I stated previously I haven't a clue as to what is available and how it is available now due to being on cable for so many years; it appears I'm already on the best provider for my area?

Perhaps BT could use "oxygen free" cable Big Al considering where Bron and I live up the mountain? I think many times I need evaluating though given the projects I take on which at first appear so simple and easy but end up biting me?

It's not only hard living here but on the news tonight we saw that a local school was having to feed 1 in 3 kids with breakfast every morning because their parents were not feeding them; anyone else see this?

I assume that a high fibre diet isn't possible in that area. That's the only way you'll get speeds comparable to Virgin cable. All other suppliers will be limited to the same speed by the BT Openreach phone line from the exchange to the house. Doesn't matter if it's BT, Plusnet, Zen Talktalk or any other, the laws of physics cannot be beaten.

The last bit, about feeding kids isn't unusual nowadays. Many primary schools around the country are now doing it. It isn't totally a case of families not affording breakfast, just thoughtless parents don't provide it.

When our grandchildren lived with us for 10 months, they developed the habit of a good breakfast. Now they continue with that habit, and turn down the offer of a second one at school. Their teachers were very surprised.

At the time of writing this our connection speed with BT is 3.16 mbs, download speed is 2.74 mbs, upload speed .82 mbs.

That includes the pushing the electrons up the hill factor.
