Hi,
Bron and I simply don't know what its like to have things go right? A few weeks ago we had problems with npower not sending us an electricity bill for over six months which eventually was resolved and we remain npower customers. Last week our TV expired as did my digital camera and even the can opener in the kitchen joined in. The TV; digital camera and can opener are now replaced but on it goes so here's a little story of life here in paradise.
I've never liked mobile phones and still don't but a while ago through discussion on the forum I relented and bought a cheap (£5) mobile phone adding £10 credit; I thought this would be useful in allowing me to contact Bron once a month whilst I was away from home at Rufforth Auto Jumble so in effect I only ever use my mobile once each month.
On 1st March I attended Rufforth once again but I was to collect a friend on the way but my friend was still in bed and his house in darkness so I completed the journey on my own. Arriving at Rufforth at 7:30am I parked the car and immediately phoned home using the mobile to inform Bron that I was on my own in case my friend contacted her; the mobile was ringing OK but no answer? Over the next ten minutes I tried contacting Bron again but still no answer which was a bit worrying because I knew Bron was home? Anyway I met up as planned with David (Yorkie) and we spent an excellent morning together hunting for the usual urgent items we didn't know we needed then I left David at 11 o'clock but I was still worried that I hadn't contacted Bron?
Back in the car I tried again a few times to contact Bron and each time the mobile was ringing OK again without reply so by now I was becoming increasingly worried and thought time I got home as quickly as possible? For speed I decided to take the M1 motorway but as usual with my luck within a few miles I was stuck fast in grid lock which stretched for many miles making the journey home long and tortuous. Eventually I walked into our bungalow to find Bron well but upset; Bron had been waiting for my call and thought perhaps I had been involved in an accident which had been distressing her all morning. I explained that I had tried many times to contact her and out of curiosity I used my mobile again calling our land-line number. Once again the mobile was ringing OK but the land-line phone was not?
So much for modern technology; I don't like mobile phones and with my luck I can't even use it once a month? Anyway the story rambles on more than I do; I browsed Virgin Media website to obtain contact information because we have been on cable for well over twenty years. Because our land-line was out of action I needed to use my mobile; I rang Virgin's number and what seemed like forever press this press that etc I eventually managed to add all my details then came the crunch; what is your phone number? I had already stated our land-line number so I presumed now I should add my mobile number? I hung up because I hadn't a clue what my mobile number was and by this time the credit on my mobile must have just about expired. Great stuff; our land-line down and mobile almost down.
Not easily beaten I then contacted Virgin via email to report the phone fault and what a pleasant surprise to receive a prompt reply as follows;
Hello,
I'm really sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with your phone line.
One of our team will call around to your home to check things out on 4/3/14 between 4-7pm. Please make sure the person who's in is over 18 years old.
Before we come to visit, it's worth doing a few little checks on your phone. First up, double check the phone's connected. If it's a cordless phone, check it's powered up or that the battery doesn't need replacing. If you've got another phone, plug that into the socket, making sure that no other equipment is in the line. If it turns out the problem is with your phone, not your line all you need to do is cancel your appointment.
If you need to amend or cancel the date or time of your appointment, simply register or sign in to your My Virgin Media account and select Your Appointments.
Alternatively you can call our automated faults service on 150 from your Virgin Media phone or mobile, or on 0845 454 1111* from any other phone and select option 2.
Otherwise, we'll see you soon.
Kind regards,
The Virgin Media team

BY now I was feeling a bit more cheerful. The Virgin engineer visited as arranged and having checked the large control box located at the end of our drive informed us that there were ten connections in the box and we were number eleven? This is now the second time Virgin Media have disconnected our phone line presumably to give to another customer leaving us without phone and without any warning whatsoever? Having mostly been pleased by Virgin's services we were happy to be told more new connections would be added within 24 hours so we signed the paperwork and waited and waited and waited. A week later we are still waiting to be connected.
Because Bron and I are regarded as such excellent customers by Virgin Media a couple of months ago we received a phone call (yes the phone works when Virgin want to contact us) saying Virgin were happy to offer us a free broadband upgrade from 20Mb/s to 30Mb/s which was good news for a change so we are still awaiting this upgrade? Since then we have received a letter from Virgin saying more good news; our broadband is being increased from 30 Mb/s to 50 Mb/s; we are still waiting for the 30 Mb/s? To add insult to injury Virgin Media have now discontinued their free online security although I believe the new "F-secure" is still free for a year then no doubt we'll have to pay once the year ends but I doubt very much if our Virgin Media bill will be reduced to compensate for this so in effect a sneaky bill rise by Virgin?
So as far as I'm concerned modern technology sucks.
Now for the interesting part where I need your expert help once again; What do you recommend as a best bundle for Bron and me regarding phone; TV and broadband? Just a basic bundle will be fine for us because we seldom watch normal TV and dislike sport and adverts with a passion; we seldom use our phone but I do use my computer but then again I'm not too bothered about superfast broadband 20 Mb/s is working OK so far.
What is involved in changing because as I say we've been on cable for well over twenty years so don't have a normal phone line into our bungalow; would we need to have a phone line installed in order to change supplier? Our brand new TV is equipped with Freeview so how would we access this; I haven't had time to experiment with the new TV yet; would I need to erect a new TV aerial? Having been reliant for so many years on cable I'm well and truly in the dark these days as to what is available?
Bron and I haven't fallen out with Virgin Media in fact we can't fall out with them because of lack of contact and in fairness as with npower it might come right in the end but I think this is as good a time as ever to see what the competition is? If we are really such good customers and are being treated so shoddily by Virgin Media then how does Virgin Media treat poor customers? A few days ago Virgin really did rub it in by sending a customer survey asking how they (Virgin) had done? I relpied politely 0/10.
A NOTE TO OUR FRIENDS: WE ARE STILL WITHOUT PHONE BUT SO FAR SMOKE SIGNALS AND EMAILS ARE GETTING THROUGH.
Kind regards, Col.
