Hi Ed,
To be honest this is the first time that I became aware of them. There is very little on the web showing Chain Home displays but in searching I did find a Google image that I think shows these tubes. Unfortunately it's in an IEEE publication that is not freely available to me but am I right in thinking that you have IEEE membership?

The VCR97 / 517 etc being airborne in H2S sets are incredibly common but I guess the VCR523 being installed on the ground in Chain Home sites is probably relatively rare and was never considered by those publishing television project designs.
