You need special oils of the correct rating.
I have religiously stuck to Ford Formula F fully synth oil and not had any noise problems so far (now 92k miles) and I don't fully understand the need to avoid tow or bump starting but the owners handbook does advise against it although without any explanation of why. They do however qualify their advice with on a hot engine.
I think the difference between electric starting and bump must be the impulsive nature of the latter.
