Annoying tuner dial pointer

I have just replaced the tuner cord on a spinney (don’t laugh) transistor radio but am really struggling with the dial pointer that just will not stop rotating when I turn tuning knob.

The cord is wrapped twice around the pointer but I cannot seem to stop the pointer either pointing up in the air or turning and scratching the chassis as its moved along the dial.  If I wrap the cord once around the pointer its fine.  The replacement cord is fairly decent stuff.

Can anyone help please?

I wonder if this is a function of the type of cord (i.e. stranded). Although perhaps counter intuitive solid fishing line works well.

I will find the old cord and check what its made from, you could be right there Peter.

Should there be a plastic or felt bob on the end of the pointer?

If you ran the cord under the pointer and push it back so the horizontal part sits on top of the metalwork, that may stop it rotating.

When a pointer was free to swing like that they often had a tiny piece of soft felt on the end to stop it scratching.
If the wrong type of cord is used and it is too stretchy I think this happens more as the cord is stretched.
Nylon mono filament is definitely the wrong type of cord. You never see this type used on any radio from new.
I use waxed whipping twine for dial cords. Just make sure it is not the type that lays flat otherwise you will get riding turns on the drive pulley.

Where the cord goes over that screw is there a proper pulley sheave there.? If not then it does not look right.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. There is no pad on the pointer and I don’t think there ever was. The pointer is actually nowhere near the dial glass when the chassis is back in its case if you look at the pics. It didn’t however play up like this til I caught the original cord with my soldering iron.  The original cord looks to be nylon over cotton?

There is just a hollow metal tube where the cord goes over the screw (see pic), doesn’t look like there ever was a plastic guide.

I did order some mono filament fishing line but after it arrived and I had a look at it I decided not to use it..

The good news is that I have tried another piece of the same cord and its going along fine now.
