Blu-ray DVD wireless help required please.

Maybe I'm being thick, but what's the point of networking the DVD player? I can understand doing the TV to watch YouTube &c or will the DVD decode what's coming via the network and send it to the TV?

His TV isn't network capable as it is an entry-level model as far as I can see, so the next best approach is to feed the Internet through the DVD player and, via the HDMI connection to the TV. My best guess.

I see. Like connecting a SCART device to a video and thence via UHF to a non-SCART TV.

It's probably all been said, but here goes:

If you look at the pic of your player on the 'Step 3' screen at the link that Colin gave in post #5, you'll see that at the right of the player there's the Wi-Fi fan-shaped symbol showing the presence of a Wi-Fi network to which the player is not yet connected. (some of the fan shaped bars are shown as greyed out. If a device - a laptop, i-pad whatever, is connected to a Wi-Fi network, all the bars of the fan-shaped symbol would be solid black until you've entered the security key).

If at stage 3 you don't see a network symbol on the set-up screen, it means you haven't got one (as it seems you don't have). If you had, you'd only need to enter the Wi-Fi security key (on the underside of the router) to get the Blu-ray player to connect to the network.

As has been said, it sounds like a new (wireless) router is called for to replace the wired one which presumably you've had for some years now Colin. Should you ever wish to, with a wireless router as well as your Blu-ray player, you could then use laptop, I-pad or similar wi-fi enabled device.

So - seems like you don't have Wi-Fi security key Colin - just that big key in your back, which I think has been overwound of late!

Thanks Colin; Lawrence and Joe. I might indeed have to admit defeat in the end Joe but at the moment I'm too dim to quit so I'll battle on further. If you did mislead me earlier Colin it went straight over my head and your intentions are always good anyway.

I'm incredibly behind the times when it comes to modern electronics even kids at school know a great deal more that I do about the subject. I will stick with this longer though because I'm learning and already know more than I did a couple of days ago about WiFi and blue-ray.

It's still possible Virgin Media can help in some way; how do wireless tablets and lap tops receive signals whilst away from home? Do these devices work on a travelling train being connected to the Internet? Wouldn't the new DVD connect the current NTL router to the TV allowing Internet to be shown via Ethernet cable assuming I had a cable long enough? These are possibly stupid questions but I learn a great deal by asking stupid questions. Whats the point in spending £99.99 for an electronic device if only a small section of the device is usable; how do home cinemas work are lots of these connected to the Internet?

There is so much information to absorb in the DVD manual regarding things I've never heard of like "Allshare"; what about Wi-Fi Direct using peer to peer network without a wireless router; I already spend a lot of time on peer to peer for downloading free movies and videos on my PC but this is mentioned on page 30 in the manual? On page 29 it states I can get network values from my Internet provider? I don't understand "Network" but there is so much to this DVD player to understand hence I'm asking you experts whilst also trying to help myself; I simply don't give up easily?

No gain without pain and I suffer plenty of pain once I start something like this but it's never boring and I'm pleased to read all your views and suggestions which are most welcome.

I'm not advocating throwing the towel in; just pointing out that you CAN'T get it working without the necessary equipment, which you do not have. You wouldn't try to use a lathe with no cutter in.

Thanks so much David; just what I needed to hear; all I need is a suitable router then? As we are with NTL cable I'm sure we are well overdue for an upgrade possibly to a Virgin Media router which would also mean changing my email address? You are so right about the big key in my back being well over-wound in fact I think it's wound up to the limit full time. I seldom use the phone and use my mobile phone even less so when I do really want to use the phone it's dead and buried hence Virgin are now going to dig the road up date unknown?

Very true Joe and I'm trying very hard to find out what the necessary equipment is which I need and at this stage it would be a suitable router? Poor choice in mentioning the lathe Joe because I've seen the lovely items you produce on your lathe with little by way of tooling but I take your point.

Old dog, new tricks, KISS, get a BT line put in, sign up for their phone and broadband, they will supply a Wi Fi gizzmo, fit an antenna or a sat dish and ditch the rest.

Good idea Lawrence in getting a BT line in but wouldn't I be going back to "snail mail"? I've been very unhappy with Virgin Media of late but where else can I sign up and get such high download speeds. I must admit though that I was sorely tempted to dump Virgin Media but I'll not give up on them just yet; up until recently the service has been excellent from Virgin and hopefully can be so once again in the near future. With my luck should I get a BT line in one of the local cats would fly up the pole and chew the wires?
