The spring-suspended assembly on the left is an attempt to stop microphonic feed back, belive it or not it was common to remove earthing to stop hum loops.be cause it has a transformer it makes no differance witch way round the mains is connected and wont have caused any damage the sound quality from these decks realy is exelent when fully serviced
and that one does look in great condition

Thanks for the info Rob, much appreciated, even if it did somewhat take the wind out of my sails re the mains arrangements!

I'm looking forward to spending time on this venerable machine soon. The intention is to have it running in a bedroom feeding an AM modulator to provide an occasional hour or two of vintage programme material for my valve radios.

I know I could just use a CD player but where's the fun in that?!

With apologies for appearing out of nowhere (hi!) and resurrecting a two year old topic, but...

I wondered if the machine mentioned in this thread ever got restored to working order.

The reason for my interest is because I've had my late father's SP/4 in the loft for a number of years and recently got it up and running again. It took a new dual 32uF capacitor, some new rubber suspension mounts and a good clean and careful lubricate, but now it's working very nicely indeed. Even the temperamental track change mechanism functions properly.

The motivation came from being invited to a 1950s themed party and it's just spent the evening providing musical entertainment, auto-reversing all night long without a hitch. It attracted quite a bit of admiration.

I've not been able to find very much information on this model and it seems to be pretty rare. Does anyone have anything to share?
