Grundig TM819A help needed

Hello, think this one is above my ability, so would anyone be able to take a look at this reel to reel for me, It comes from my grundig arundel radiogram, it has no belts, totally filthy, and two of the fuses have been bridged with wire.

I know it's a long shot, but I would really like to keep the radiogram as standard, I have repaired the electricals in the amp/tuner, and cleaned and regreased the turntable, so I only need the reel to reel repaired to finish the whole lot off.

All costs met, and a good drink on top, would prefer someone local, but will post if needed, I am that desperate to finish it .

Well I'm in Bolton, but I do go to Chas E. Miller's do's. Get the manual for this unit if you can. Clean the thing thoroughly and put the correct fuses in it. Then lace up a tape and hit play, (Either one. Try both) and see what happens.

Does the motor turn? If not, why not. Check the wiring to it and anything it goes through.

Hello Everyone, so I bit the bullet, and decided to tackle the job, (well, you don't learn by other people doing the repairs for you)
So after a 200 mile round trip to collect a grundig TK830 that was working, set about to tackle the job,
so progress so far, is a good clean, a few checks with the meter, and replacement of the drive belts scavenged from the donor deck,
so now I hope to set to work on replacing the horrible brown capacitors today, most of them are showing signs of distress, either cracked or flaking, but feel a lot happier now, as it looks a lot better after a good clean, will keep you posted as to progress or will ask advice as needed,

PROBLEMS! all the wax caps have been replaced, fuses replaced with correct replacements, and refitted to the radiogram, turned on, and all the heaters started to glow as they should, pressed the record button and the magic eye sprang to life, so tried the functions, fast forward ok, rewind ok, pressed play, and one of the relays at the back started to quickly open and close, pressed stop and then play again, and this time the tape played, moved the speed adjuster, and it did what it should, so all tape control functions were working as they should, but it had no sound output, the same could be said as to recording, as when in record mode, the magic eye turns green but does not move, even when you adjust the record level, but pops could be heard when you change the Gram/Radio/micro selector switch. so this far I decided to pop to the kitchen to put the kettle on, on returning with my cup of coffee, I was greeted with the sound of what I could only describe as frying bacon, so quickly switched off and removed the deck to have a look,

On inspection, one of the plastic caps had decided to part company with it's innards, bubbling a black sticky mess from its terminal end, I take that it is an electrolytic capacitor, as it has a red and black wire , it is quite large, but is only rated at 0.2uf, but have never come across this sort of cap before, it reads on can, 0.2uf + 100ohms, 220V ac, temp max 70c ZN 1212 F, and it is made by FRACO. is this an electrolytic that also comprises a bleed resistor?

So gentlemen, a couple of questions if I may,

Am I right in understanding that if these caps are not fully operating the relays, could that be part of the problem as to why there is no record level/sound output?

Also, what could I replace the caps with, I have some 1uf 450v electrolytics in stock, could I use a couple of them in series and a 100ohm resistor to replace them with.

I am trying my best, I am working blind, because I cannot find the service data for this deck, any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Usually components like that are used as mains filters although 220 volts sounds low to be on the mains. Or does it actually say 220 to 2000 volts?

It looks like a mains suppressor Paul.
These were commonly used in vacuum cleaners to reduce interference from the motor.
You may well pick one up from a local vac. service shop.
It will probably not effect the operation if it is removed but make a note of the connections, for when you fit the replacement.

The capacitor is unlikely to be an electrolytic type. Originally it could have been a wax-paper type but it could be replaced with a modern MDC (mixed dialectric capacitor). It looks as though it is 0.2 Mfd. Whether you will be able to source a filter with the built in resistor is a different matter. You could try a Google search for RC filters or suppressors. The resistor could be a standard carbon or metal film type.
You may even be able to remove the inside of your filters and incorporate, the replacement capacitor and resistor into the empty case.

Thanks Roger, there are four of these capacitors in total, they are used in pairs connected across a relay, hope the pictures make things clearer.

Yes, much clearer now. They are there to suppress any interference from the relay contacts opening and closing.
Unfortunately, once replaced, they are unlikely to solve your no signal problem. At least it will be one more section sorted.
