Anyone got any of these where you have to mess about with a sucker, if you can find it, on the front of the bulb, to remove and replace them?

I Have some and with 8ft high ceilings and getting ancient and more dodery dont find this fun anymore.  Anyway I came across these:

The long barrel leaves about 20mm sticking out of the fitting so no sucker needed.  You soon dont notice this when off and when on you cant see it anyway.  You have to get the type where ther barrel extends down the bulb.

That's why they say "keep all packaging" etc.. BluTak works well for these things too as do children's "sucker darts" if they are a toy now.

Many LED downlighters and other luminaires have non-replaceable "bulbs". With such long lifetimes this is viable. I admit I have seen infant mortality and had to replace whole fittings which is a nuisance even if the replacement parts are provided FOC under warranty.

I posted in a hurry !  Should have included a pic of the fitting with the 'correct' short bulb  as some may not have come to use these, my advice steer clear.  There are types around that use a small Edison screw which are much easier to fit as you dont have to alighn the tricky baynet of the GU10.  For ones that have the bulb housings mounted externally on a plate, I have one that uses a screw off short ring so the bulb can be grasped and no sucker needed.

   

The long barrel ones are a modern idea and I havent looked for a fitting for these but as shown they go in the older fittings with the extension that can be grasped.

Why have they made these long body types?  Possibly to allow more room for components and better interference suppresion.

The long body types may have dated from a misguided attempt at making compact fluorescents in that format.

The eight I installed in our kitchen ceiling twenty years ago, are a bit fiddly, they are secured by a spring clip around the edge, but there's a notch in it, so you can use a small screwdriver to hook it out.

 I replaced one a week ago. I've a step stool so they are easy to reach. I'm 85.

We have 8 in our kitchen ceiling. Spring clip fittings.

Around four or five years ago, one went dark. Carefully bought a replacement with the same colour temperature. To find that it did not match the other seven.

Guess the result?

Some of mine use the spring clip which is certainly easie

Might be an idea to get a pair of steps, with a hand grab rail, Sean.  One fall at your or my age might be a disaster.

I have bought long and short body LED types and am going to fit them in place of all the working Halogen bulbs. Not so much for power saving as hopefully the LEDs will last longer and the older I get the less likely it is I will want or be able to change them.

I have thought of doing the same for the 5ft flourescent tube at the same time
