Television reception in the car

I don't think me giving hand signals from the wrong side of the car would be much appreciated by continental drivers.

I was amazed a week or too ago to see a motorcyclist giving hand signals. I expect even here if you stick arm out for right turn some idiot will try to overtake thinking you are waving them past!

I occasionally see motorcyclists giving hand signals. They seem quite sensible for them if their intentions may be unclear. I wouldn't even think about it in a car nowadays.

Most of my bikes are not fitted with turn indicators so, I regularly use hand signals. I do also give hand signals in addition to using the indicators, if the bike has them, if I feel that drivers in my vicinity may need to be reminded of my intentions.
My James Handyvan is not fitted with turn indicators and I do think that when giving the hand signal for turning left, most drivers don't know what I am signalling and I make allowances for this.
I had never thought about the problem of hand signals in a RH drive car in Europe or vice versa; I will have a look in some old editions of the Highway code, in case there is any guidance.

Some past edition(s) of the "Construction and use" regulations forbade a CRT being in view of the driver. It was a while ago, what about VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) dash gauges? I suppose that went out of the window when LCDs came about.

Oh yes.

Up a mountain with a nice big Group E el cheapo yagi* pointed across the Bristol channel to Huntshaw Cross or whereever when BBC2W would supplant whatever the feck I wanted to watch with something tediously sporty.

It tended to be a bit cold in the winter.

It's the one thing to be grateful for to Rupert for his satellite constellation.

The tv was a Crown b&w 5" battery mains portable.

I wonder when I did that last, must be 20 or more years ago.

*Said yagi resides even yet in the boxroom, now completely redundant.

It's always been absolutely normal for motorcyclists to use hand signals (and I've had to use some very non approved hand signals to many a half blind car driver!). I've ridden many bikes without indicators (it's legal to have no indicators and of course rely entirely on hand signals but if indicators are fitted then they must work.... allegedly) and you soon get used to it.
Always to be done in conjunction with mirrors of course and the "life saver look back", as they used to call it, when turning left.

Certainly in 1970s was true in UK for motorbikes and solution to legal "broken" indicators was to tape or tie bags or plastic overthem so they would not be mistaken as indicators. Police & driving test inspector said that was OK. No idea on current laws.

Thanks for this, David. It is claimed the set consumes the same amount of current as one headlamp. At 8 amps, some headlamp!
