Faux Shark or Alligator radio.

Picked up a battery radio today that has no name. The tuning scale is  faded to near nothing and there are no other indicators as to the maker.

It is wrapped in faux skin, possibly to look like alligator or shark?  4 Side contact valves. HT and LT batteries of course.

I can't upload pictures to this forum, for some reason it always says that they are too big, so does anyone have a clue as to the make and model?

I find that photos go up fine if they are resized to 1024X768 for all sites I use that do not automatically resize them.

No, far too good looking and tiny in comparison.  This one is side contact valves!  Much bigger, barely portable by one man!

It has to be 1938-1939 (though up to 1941 is possible).
Not Ever Ready, because they used only combo packs.
Also many used the Sylvania developed Octal, though the sidebase type are basically same and in some cases rebased imports.
From 1940 the UK makers swapped the bases for octal (no other change needed and wires same order)

Is it Alligator leatherette or crackle finish? Shark effect is like sandpaper. A rough grey finish was used for Forces Entertainment models.

(Pye & Ever Ready had some cross supply arrangement up to at least 1938, many Ever Ready with Pye chassis (metal work) and some Ever Ready branded valves in Pye, though Mullard supplied most of Ever Ready, a few mains models maybe Mazda)

The 1.4V battery Edge connect models were quite short lived. Before 1938/1939 UK was 2V battery models. By 1940/1941 most 1.5V and 2V models were Octal.

Not Philco, they all Octal.

McMichael in that era (1937 to 1950) worst for scales that faded.
Indication of
2V valves ( spades, flying leads for HT)
Combo or separate HT and 1.5V packs (single plug, often same as B4 valve pins with LT either side of long axis, vs two plugs)
Side or end tuning of IFTs, if core. Or if fixed coils and trimmer caps.
Rotating pointer or wire cursor. If pointer, does it go same way (slot friction drive or cord) as tuning knob or opposite (external friction drive).
Any logos? Horse = Invicta, Sunburst = Pye, sailor's head & hat = Pilot, V = Vidor

Single or dual loops for aerials?

Wavebands? 1 (no knob), 2 (toggle or knob?), 3 (knob). The SW as well as LW & MW is rare.

Scale & knobs on top or on front with speaker?

Rough size of speaker and cabinet.

Size of empty battery space. Any black burns on inside bottom (means 2V lead acid leaked).

Make and models of the four valves (five would be unusual on UK battery only set of that era)

Won't be Decca. They used the Mazda types and then changed to regular octal. Never used Edge on 1.4V battery sets.

Most just used the Sylvania type Octal, or Brimar version of them.

The 2V sets tend to be mix of B5 & B7 base rather than Edge, then from 1940s the Octal.

If you're working on a PC (laptop or desktop, Linux or Windows) there are free right click resizers available. Just right click on an image file and choose the amount of resizing. Don't know about Mac or phones. I use one all the time.
