BECG - Our first open days!

The BECG will be having its first open days at our base near Lincoln on Saturday 17th September and Sunday 18th September. From 11am to 4pm. We will be part of Heritage Open Days: https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/

I've attached the mailing that we're sending to everyone on our friends list but everyone is welcome. We'd love to see you.

Hi Albert, I really hope we'll find a safe place to put your lovely CAT9 on display for the open days. At the moment it's all rather chaotic with far too much that we need to get done before the days.

We've been at Hemswell for the last few days getting things ready of the open days on 17/18 September. There's still a huge amount to do but here are a couple of progress photos.

It's real "pub Axminster". Costs a fortune, almost indestructible. The room the we now call Studio 3 will be one of our main museum display spaces. It was previously a pub called the Gunners Arms. It was probably a bar in the RAF days too. We think there is oak strip flooring under the carpet but haven't investigated.

The carpet looks OK but could do with a shampoo. The most recent indignity was a powder fire extinguisher set off by local vandals shortly before we owned the building. Clearing up after a powder extinguisher is a job for a thousand maids with a thousand mops. We've had advice from the fire brigade and will be using only water mist extinguishers. We will be rigging a green screen demonstration. Sometimes called chroma key, it's used to overlay people on a different background. Used to be blue screen but cameras give better results with green. I will try to wear my green teeshirt on the open days

Our building is the former Sergeants' Mess at RAF Hemswell. It was built before WW2 when the RAF was being rapidly expanded. RAF Hemswell was used by bombers such as the Lancaster.  Whatever your views on the WW2 campaign to bomb nazi Germany, many brave men flew from Hemswell and a large number didn't return.

I have designed a simple memorial board (2 sheets of A3) that we will display at our open days. Alongside the board we will have an R1155 receiver, the famous set used by much of Bomber Command. If we can find a T1154 transmitter we will display that too.
