Just put any silicon diode across it and see if that restores the meter to life.

I would try a 1N1448 for starters. There may be a number on it if you remove it. Is that water damage to the pcb?

That diode is just in series with the battery feed, so for testing purposes, you could short it out. If you were 100% confident that you'd never offer up the battery snap the wrong way around, you leave it shorted. But I have a cheap meter somewhere which lacks such protection, and I blew up the voltage regulator IC by doing just that (really must get around to fixing that!).
Just about anything would do to replace it. Assuming the original is an 1N4148, but it's not critical. Another picture of the board - click to zoom: https://www.markhennessy.co.uk/budget_mu...cb_top.jpg I'm guessing we're seeing flux residue...

Thanks for all the replies.
I bridged the open diode with a piece of wire and the meter came on, I ordered some 1n1448 diodes from rs and they arrived yesterday. The diode when removed had nothing on it to identify itself so I soldered in a replacement 1n1448 and it all worked OK. I didn't haven't a clue what the staining was so I removed the "Chang" branded elec cap to check it, it was fine but I replaced it anyway. The board was cleaned up with servisol on a cotton bud and has responded well, i didn't want to chance IPA on that board. It's not a class repair but it's got the meter working which is the main thing, I had to offset the diode a bit to ensure the lid would go back on ok. Just wondering why the diode went OC? Thanks for the help. Danndad. |
