Vintage maps

Nothing to do with radios, but if like me you find vintage maps fascinating and like to compare an old map to a new map then you may be interested to browse around the maps on this web site.
It has old maps of the UK and in the top right of the screen there is a slider bar which you can use to fade to the modern map, or overlay it so you can see the changes.
Both links below will take you to Wickford nr. Basildon on the map but you can zoom out and drag the map all over the UK (except the far west of the UK for some reason) and then zoom in again to see where ever you want.

Interesting to note that there used to be a link from the Southminster branch towards Southend Victoria as well as towards London.

The National Library of Scotland have a wealth of vintage maps as well. See https://maps.nls.uk/

There is another library with an extensive range of old maps somewhere on the south coast but I don't seem to have it bookmarked on this PC.

On the subject of mapping, did you know that you can use some Ordnance Survey maps for your own purposes, including modifying them and openly publishing them anywhere?

I used to use them by copying them off the screen and pasting them together to create the area I wanted but that has now changed and you have to download the entire 100km square sheet. This is divided into 100 10km squares which are subdivided into four 5km squares, so thats 400 files per sheet!

I looked at where I live and have identified a small ruin as a water house.
It is not shown on any modern maps.

I looked at my own area (London N12) and moving a little west I saw the ill fated northern Line extension from Mill Hill East to Edgware on the 1955-1961 map. All that remains now is the single track branch from Finchley Central to Mill Hill East. This has a dramatic viaduct over the Dollis Valley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollis_Brook_Viaduct

As well as the OS maps I referred to earlier, another source of mapping which can be used freely is OpenStreetMap®

For a bit of mapping fun, take a look at the 50,000:1 Landranger map of the Isle of Wight.

Start at the Needles and work your way east along the coast to St Catherine's Point, looking very carefully at the detail of the cliffs.

You should be able to see where the cartographers have managed to embed (presumably, their own) names in the mapping detail!

There's nothing new about putting idiosyncratic marks etc in drawings and other places. Likewise "easter eggs" in software and equipment. Older Tektronix manuals are famous for this: http://w140.com/tekwiki/wiki/Tektronix_Cartoons My Tek 1755A vector and waveform monitor has an easter egg. If you press the right set of buttons you see a load of fish swimming around the screen.

Another lost railway line shows up on the Victorian map. The line that ran from Hammersmith towards Shepherd Bush. You can still see the old viaduct remains from a District line train as it approaches  Hammersmith  from the West. There is also a bridge remaining over what was the railway towards the Green end of Shepherds Bush Road.(A219).
