Not sure if this should go under cars, hifi or websites but this is an interesting project.

Looks a little overkill to me lol. My stepson left a system in the shed when he moved out, but I suspect far more downmarket. My fear would be jabbing an elbow into a speaker cone when getting comfy.
An interesting little(?) project non the less. It makes one think about things. Tracy

3/4" "armour"plexiglass with bolts round the windscreen surround, just to keep it from popping out when the sound system is running a bit loud!

Bit late replying but.... . From what I can gather these lads build these systems mainly to get the sort of reaction they get at the start of the video you linked Mike. Seems a lot of effort and expense to go to, but that's young lads for you, it's really just another willy waving contest.
Still, from an engineering POV it's interesting, I've been watching this bloke - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9Gitey...qyBAt9oM9w fix car amps. How they boost the 12-14v lower voltage high current to get +/-100v and up rails is worth a look as is the beefing up of the cars/vans charging system to run such a rig by installing several big alternators. For more car sillyness and bad jumpers see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWoiN9aa8YE Andy.

Hi Andy, I did some work on car/ caravan power boosters some time ago.
There does not seem to be a ban on then, but from what I've read they are discouraged as the EMC from any switching devices can cause havoc with the many electronic systems in the car. Some models are a lot worse than others. With a homebrew design it could be difficult to test correctly and you may have invalid insurance if your electronics causes an accident (or the overpaid lawyer decides it is remotely possible and convinces a judge of the same). I would be interested in hearing others views. From the caravan point of view, unless a different connector from the now standard 13 pin one is fitted, the max current is 10A per pin. On the earlier 12 S/N (7 pin type, some of the connectors (but not all) could be run up to 15A. Ed

I haven't studied the videos in your link, Andy, but I have to say that, IMHO, 4000 or 10000 watts RMS, as stated is far in excess of anything needed, and I wouldn't want to be within earshot of any amplifier of that sort of power output!

I always call those things "axle bouncers" because they make the car bounce up and down so that there appears to be a good reason for the windows to be all steamed up
A bloke in our street tried it and a copper looked in and realized that the bouncing was fake and the steam was sweet smelling smoke. The copper took him back to the station because the cigarette he was smoking was too strong for him to be driving

You might need to move to another planet to get far enough away form one of those! |
