The EL51 will be the line output valve. This valve is similar to the EL50 which was used in the pre-war Pye TVs, models 9C and 12C.

Thanks for the information everyone, much appreciated.

The mechanical construction seems to match the more expensive Premiere advert.
I think the EL51 is the frame output amplifier, all the transformers on the chassis are iron cored and appear to be low frequency parts.

The front of the CRT is actually fitted with an implosion guard.
I dont think I'll be applying power, not least because the only EHT supply I have is on my Ekco TV.

The set caused quite a stir at the boot sale, two people I met had relations who had built TVs after the war. 
One of which obny ever worked briefly and was thrown into a river in dusgust.

My uncle also built a TV and later went to to work at Philips/Mullard for much of his career.
He played an important role in my developing interest in electronics, he gave me components from time to time.

I had a few old home construction books when I was a boy and adapted the designs in them to make my own oscilloscope using a military display unit with a VCR97 tube.
There was a very good army surplus shop near where I lived and I got all sorts of stuff there - Eley's was the meeting place electronics enthusiasts on Saturday mornings.
I also buillt a flying spot scanner with a photo multiplier tube to scan a transparency and show it on a TV. it was a bit too complicated for me at the time but it - kind of - worked.
The design for this was also in an old home construction book, I wish I could have a copy of that again to check the details.

My goodness, is that schematic for a dual beam oscilloscope using a vibrator for the beam switching?

I too made a start on building a flying spot scanner in my teenage years but I never got further than generating the spot. (No flying.)

Interesting read. Perhaps I came across as patronizing a bit. Over the years I've seen many come and go on forums for many reasons.
I certainly now know that you will be OK with the chassis and sorry for telling you how to suck eggs.
I'll keep my eyes on the thread to see what transpires.

Hi Djrm, if you are up this way I have the book you have shown and a few other similar ones. I too built circuits from them in my youth.
These books sometimes appear on ebay.

Hi Ed, I visit the north east from time to time and would very much like to see your old books, especially if you have the one with the flying spot scanner design.

Since getting the kit TV I've found an instruction manual for another DIY TV, its a bit tatty but goes into detail about the design and construction and includes the schematics too.

I'll photograph/scan the complete book and make it into a pdf or something to preserve it. A couple of pages shown in the photo below:

I stumbled across this scan of an old DIY TV construction project today.
Good quality scan of very well illustrated construction manual.
I love the old adverts from these documents too.
