Unknown sad little radio

This sad little set came my way recently. Don't know the make but the model number is 439. It's AC/DC, pre-miniature valves and the volume control has been replaced. I suppose it's quite cute but needs a lot of cleaning up. The case and back (bottom really ) look to have little or no damage. Circumstances suggest it was in regular use as a workshop set until fairly recently.

Any idea what it is please?

When identified it will be offered for a donation to the Vintage Wireless Museum.

Let us know how you go with this radio. Mine suffers audio distortion at low volume.
