Was there a connection, association or business arrangement between Beam Echo (with its Avantic brand hi-fi products) and Jason, in respect of some of the Avantic tuners?
My attention was first drawn to the Beam Echo Avantic BM612 AM/FM tuner by an item and an advertisement in Hi-Fi News (HFN) for 1958 September. I had acquired this issue primarily because it contained the article on the Jasonkit JTV FM-TV Sound tuner, as discussed in this thread: http://golbornevintageradio.co.uk/forum/...p?tid=6373.
The description looked familiar – in fact it was very similar to that for the Jason AM/FM2 model:
The Jason AM/FM2 had been introduced late in 1957 as a member of the then-new Jason matching-equipment range. So it predated the Avantic BM612.
It seems that the chances that two makers would adopt near-identical specifications for their top-of-the-range tuners was somewhat unlikely, the more so considering that both had relatively unusual features, such as cascode FM RF stage, variable AFC and twin-neon FM tuning indicators. Both also had variable selectivity AM sections, not in and of itself so unusual at the time, but the bandwidth choice of ±4 kHz and ±8 kHz, the same for each, was unusual.
A reasonable conclusion is that Beam Echo used the Jason AM/FM2 circuit for its Avantic BM612, albeit in a different case. Given that Beam Echo apparently used Mullard circuits as the basis for its amplifiers, it is not so surprising that it would also have used third-party circuits for its tuners.
The respective prices were similar, namely £33 for the Jason, and £35 for the Beam Echo, both before purchase tax.
Since first making the possible connection, I acquired a sales brochure for the Avantic BM612:
Here it was referred to as the “type 612” rather than as the “BM612”, but it was the same tuner as described in HFN 1958 September. Certainly the valve line-up was generally consistent with Jason practice. For example, Jason did use the ECC81 as FM oscillator and AFC reactance valve in some of its other models, such as the FMT3 and JTV2. The AM line-up, with separate EF89 RF amplifier, was similar to that used in the Jason AM/FMS2, a contemporary of the AM/FM2. The use of an ECF80 triode section as FM mixer in the BM612 corresponds with the stated use of a triode mixer in the AM/FM2.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a brochure for the Jason AM/FM2, which basis other Jason brochures of the time, would provide the valve line-up.
The Avantic BM612/Jason AM/FM2 was certainly quite a sophisticated unit for its time, at least by the standard of prevailing UK practice. Distinguishing features included a three-gang FM front end with cascode RF amplifier, a four-stage FM IF strip, and variable AFC. The AM side was also three-gang with an RF amplifier, Jason evidently seeing the third gang and the RF amplifier as beneficial even for an MF-only receiver, particularly one that might be used for long-range as well as quality local reception.
The twin-neon FM tuning indicator, driven by a pair of triodes, one supposes was derived from the Quad FM circuit, as described in Wireless World (WW) 1955 September p.428ff, after having been mentioned briefly in WW 1955 July, p.313. Addition of the tuning indicator was one aspect of the rework done by John Collinson of the original Quad FM design by Geoffrey Horn, the prototype having been mentioned in WW 1952 July, p.257. One may deduce that the Quad twin neon tuning indicator was derived from the Sonocraft circuit described in Audio magazine for 1953 January, p.56.
