My personal view is that such ideas have really been there in principle from the start. The succession of running horse pictures were really digitised analogue. I can see the difference you are inferring to here but there are levels of digitisation. It is just the technology catching up with thinking. It is maybe likely that someone had even thought of this many years before but the technology was not there? Thank you for the update.

All moving pictures are sampled in the time domain. We don't usually call that digital. Analogue video is sampled in the vertical dimension. We call it lines. Digital video is also sampled in the horizontal dimension. Finally it's quantised.Some of the theory of 2 dimensional sampling of images was first worked out by Mertz and Gray in a famous paper published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1934. Nyquist was probably responsble for the rest of the theory of sampling and quantising.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to upset the applecart. Just giving a personal view from a different angle. I realise the BBC paper refers toward the current system. My mind has a tendency to wander around all over the place with different ideas and concepts.
