I've just seen this. I've got an ML1 and ML3 (steady Alan.....) still sitting in my very cluttered garage. I've lots of pics and a full manual. Let me know if there is any info that may be of use to you.
The ML1 spindle doesn't have any bearings and careful when nipping the spindle down that you dont crack the casting (the ML3 I bought had this issue!). The oil acts as the bearing to the spindle. I'm sure my learned colleagues will be able to say more about this.
