H Sean, spindle is not too bad. Large gouge looks as if the back gears were nor fully tightened and moved under load. It is better to use a "cup point" screw here and lightly dimple the shaft to prevent this sort of thing happening.
Use machine with care as this could be a stress point that could cause the spindle to fracture under very heavy work. (A new one could easily be made up.)
