Myford ML 1

Hi, just had a quick glance on here and thought I'd give it a go. On Friday I bought a Myford ML 1 off Gumtree so I'm waiting with bated breath for it to arrive (it's traveling the full length of UK south to north I live not far from Inverness). The lathe is not complete no motor and a couple of other bits and bobs. There has been very good coms between me and the seller he actually arranged everything from his end, so I'm relying on UPS to do their thing .

Are there any Myford ML 1 owners on here, if so I'd really like to have a blether about this lathe and find out sources for parts for this lovely old lathe so I can bring it back to life . I believe the Myford ml1, ml, 2ml, ml3 and maybe the ml4 are compatible for a lot parts correct my if I'm wrong. Anyways that a little insight and I hope to get to know some of you on here.

I don't know what spares they have for the old ones, but there's plenty of second hand ones available.

Nice Motor. Cromptons made good ones in their day.
Please don't fit a Reversing Switch - it's dangerous.

Hi Alan, yes nice motor, silent and little vibration. It came with the round front myford reversing switch which I never used. This motor was replaced by a 3 phase Italian motor and an ABB 3 phase inverter and controller. So far I,ve built 0 locomotives and 0 steam engines but I do have a set of castings for a Stuart 10!.

Sean, before you decide on which motor to use, have a look at www.inverterdrive supermarket. You might find its not that dear to buy a 3 phase motor and controller. My offer still stands though. PS My motor weighs 10.7 Kgs

Hi Sean, the gears and other bits on the ML1 to 4 are all mostly interchangeable and they were all good solid basic lathes and a good way to learn the art od turning.
I have a copy of the original handbook, if you PM me your e-mail I'll send you a scan.
It would be worth subscribing to Model Engineers Workshop, an excellent mag and full of hints, tips and tools to make.

Can anyone tell me if the Myford ml1, ml2, ml3, ml4 have any comparisons regarding parts, I'm curious.
