ISTR they had a short track. Otherwise we could have used standard pots and fixed the result in the electronics. I still reckon it's a lot easier to do an electronic fix than a mechanical one. Esepcially as you can set the top and bottom end points with a little bit of tweaking presets rather than trying to get the mechanical stops to exactly match the pot rotation.
With a bit of low cunning it might even be possible to bodge the end connections on an ordinary pot.
Another approach would be to use gears. Meccano ones with drilled out holes perhaps? I doubt the feel would be too good but that could a problem with your belt driven solution.
