Had a bit of a drama yesterday with my band-saw.
It’s 17 years old and is a long since obsolete Elektra Bekum ‘BAS15/4 GWN’. (15cm capacity - 6” in old money). I was sawing away merrily, when I felt something small drop on my foot. I looked down and it was one of the pegs out of the lower blade guide. The two pegs are held into the guide with an Allen screw each and I just assumed that the screw had worked loose and that the peg needed to be put back and the screw tightened. I removed the heavy cast iron saw table to take a closer look, and discovered to my horror that the die-cast alloy in the lower guide had fractured.
I assumed that given the age of the saw, and the fact that Elektra Bekum was taken over by Metabo years ago, that I’d be out of luck for spares. More in hope than expectation, I trawled internet and came across a firm aptly called ‘Power Tool Spares', based in Boston, Lincs. Found the manual on their website, complete with exploded views so I could identify the part number. There was a full price list of all the spares they stock for this model (96 spares, plus 21 different saw blades), and to my surprise, the item I needed was in stock. I ordered it at 2pm yesterday - it arrived this morning and is now fitted. (£8.80, plus P&P & VAT = £15.00)
They have over a million spares in stock for about 120 different brands of power tools, plus a wide range of mower spares. If they haven’t got it, they’ll get it. A great family run firm that’s survived for over 100 years, despite the DIY stores and builders’ merchants, Screwfix et al creaming off a lot of what was their traditional product range. Certainly a firm worth bookmarking should you ever need power tool spares.

I’ve attached a few pics of the offending part alongside the new one, and with the new part fitted.
First pic shows the fractured old guide with the new one alongside. Second and third pics are the new guide with the pegs and thrust bearing fitted, fourth pic shows the lower guide fitted back in place and the last pic shows the table refitted, and the upper blade guide.
So, no dramas after all!
