Reliable washers.

I was sweeping my drive when a washer repair bloke came out of a neighbours house. I got yabbering to him & asked him which was the most reliable washer? He said to get the cheapest one you can find from Tesco, Asda, Curries ect & dump it when it conks out & buy another cheapo. He recons that works out cheaper on average over the years than buying a top of the range for 3 or 4 times more than the cheapo as it's unlikely to last 3 or 4 times as long. He also says they all wash about as good as each other. Not sure if I agree with him or not..

We bought a base model Bosch machine and it has been reliable apart from the processor crashing occasionally so that the power has to be cycled.
It is about 10 years old now.

When I first saw the Title I thought what sort? Plain, Spring, Coil, Star, Belleville, Plastic, Insulating, ........
Then it all became clear
I have to say that I agree with him. Having bought Washing Machines these last 35 years or so there doesn't seem to be much in it. In fact I'd go so far as to say that the oldest ones were more reliable and long-lived.
I think our best one was a Hotpoint Washer/Dryer. It's only shortcoming was that it had an LCD which clearly wasn't well enough protected. They changed it annually until they got fed up and gave us a newer model without an LCD.

Hotpoint spares are the cheapest on the market and the machines are reasonably easy to fix. Worst one I ever came across in my time was a Hoover 1100, in which to get the 1100 spin speed all they did was put a smaller wheel on the back of the drum whilst the rest of the machine was the old 800 series. kept knocking the nuts out of the 800 series bearings, absolute piece of dingo's kidneys as machines go. Second worst was a Servis, when the motor blew it took the mechanon box with it, rendering the whole machine as scrap.

We had a Hoover 'Electronic 1100' for quite a time. I changed the Bearing many times until the Support Bracket started to rip out of the back of the Drum.

Interesting comments. We've lived here 16 years & we are on our 3'rd cheapo washer, all cost less than £200. So we've had 16 years of washing for less that £600. (well more years as the 3'rd one is still going strong, it's a Beko) Cheaper than going to the laundrette like they do in the TV soaps, always wondered why Dot Wool or whatever her name is doesn't buy a cheapo washer..

I had a Beko larder sized deep freeze with the traffic light display. It stopped working but still showed green. I took it directly to the tip and bought s different make.
It was only 2 years old. As it had lied to me the brand is now banned from my home.
I discovered later that some Beko appliances had been causing fires. I was lucky.
Automatic fire extinguishers are expensive too.

Only got the Beko washer as it was cheap & had a free 5 year warranty , had it 18 months & it's been OK so far. Got a Beko fridge back in 1997 when I was on the dole for £20, (special thing the government was doing at the time) it's still working perfect, if it conks out tomorrow it owes me nowt.

Few years ago bought a mixer for £26, the sales bloke wanted me to take a 3 year extended warranty for an extra £33, I told him I'd just buy a new mixer if it conked, he still waffled on though..

It is the first time I have heard of a warranty that costs more than buying another one. Buy two and eliminate waiting in for the engineer if it does fail.
Cordless tools are a buy two job now with the price of extra batteries and yes that is what I do at £20 a piece and extra batteries costing an average of £40 each.

Most reliable and cost effective washers we sold were Asko, now sold as ISE. We sold them for light commercial use such as old folks homes where they ran 16 hours every day. The motor brushes used to wear out in 3 or 4 years, simple job to fit new ones.
Very little else went wrong despite the abuse.
