O.K. the repair work on my 8 track car player is now complete. I cleaned the heads again and lubricated the capstan shaft. Also cleaned all around with cotton buds. I bought an album called Holiday by the group America and have been playing it in 8 track format. I was having issues with the drive belt flying off at times so I tried another belt and that has worked itself in O.K.
I wouldn't rave about the audio quality. It's not bad but there's the odd instance of wow and flutter on some vocal parts. This was always a criticism with respect to 8 Track. What bothers me most is the audio vibrates a bit on higher volume. The speaker is old and so is the tape so maybe it's just an age thing. I tried re-cleaning the heads but sounds still the same. Better at low audio and buzzy when loud (from speaker).
I must say it's strange to be on a seventies canal boat and using audio that would have been in use at that time. It's still not as good as my Sony C.D. player but I do have the 8 Track Bug, I think. It gets addictive.
Later I have a huge challenge which is a Radio-Mobile and 8 track player that is stone dead. Inside it has a bit of chassis rust and some really worn and mouldy wires. Can't wait to see if I can restore it and certainly it's going to be a big job.
However, I need to finish my Pye Car Cassette player first and then we'll see.
A pic enclosed of the 8 track.
