Yes, I have a supply of aluminium angle from which I can do same. But it's not just the vice jaws I wish to protect but the work-piece too. And if that work-piece is itself aluminium, (as it often is), there is not the inconsiderable chance of its surface becoming marked, scratched or indented whilst in the firm grip of the vice. However, with fibre-lined jaw protectors, (which is what I now use), since that fibre is softer than aluminum, such unwanted marks etc. won't happen.
Plus, there is also the question of how to arrange such aluminium protectors so that not only are they securely self-attached to the vice jaws but also to enable those protectors to be removed for those occasions when the protectors are not required. With my existing fibre-jaw protectors, those two requirements are very easily met.
