Odd speaker bodge.

Mother-in-law gave me a pair of Celestion Ditton 44 speakers, I rigged them up to my cheapo stereo & WOW they sounded fantastic. SWMBO came home & said "they're too big, they'll have to go" I begged & pleaded to keep them, she said I could keep one, I said "that's no good they've got to match, otherwise it'll sound terrible, & to prove it I rigged one original stereo speaker on one channel & a 44 on the other.

To my surprise it sounded just as good as the two 44's did, she looked smug & I looked crestfallen, & that's how it's been for a while. My mate who's an audio nerd thinks I should be shot for 'crimes against good audio' lol, but it works for me..

Could always ask you ma-in-law to give her daughter a good talking to, to get her mind right!

If you have room to set them up in another room do that for yourself and replace the lounge system with something tiny and tinny enough that that the good speakers get invited back again.
DAB radios usually have tinny enough speakers to do this job.

may I ask what make were the other speakers?
ditton 44 are good speakers .are you Shure they are working ok?
is your amp powerful enough to drive them?

I think it was the Size not the Sound that the Good Lady didn't like.

Ha, one advantage of being single, if I want to put up a pair of 1930s theater horns I'm free to do it. They're not in the living room however.

Daren't ask her Mum to talk to her, she't take SWMBO's side, they stick together like glue.

Re # 4.
The other speaker came with the stereo, it's a panasonic that cost about £120 about 8 years ago, still works OK though. I never ramp the sound up as I live in an end terraced house.

Yes it was the size she didn't like, the one 44 I'm allowed to use is in a corner on the floor so out of the way, the other tiny panasonic speaker is up on the wall in the other corner. Totally against all the hi-fi rules of course, my audio nerd mate Jack has to hide his eyes when he comes round, he'd report me to the Police for it if he could. The other 44 is on it's side in the spare bedroom being used as a bedside table when Mother-in-law stays. Jack doesn't know about that, I think he'd kill me if he did..

They make splendid Plant or Flower Pot stands. You could try that approach. Didn't work for me though.
I've long believed that's how and why the Japanese cracked it in the '70s - they realised that it's women who buy these things and hence thay have to look good, the sound being secondary. I've never met a woman yet who thought Quad Electrostatics looked anything but horrible. However, in that case I think they have a point.

Many moons ago I had a pair of Tannoy Chatsworths, Her indoors always reckoned that they were too big so when we left the Uk they were sold for £60 the pair.
Now I have a a couple of little piccolinos on the wall high up out of sight. Boo Hoo.
