electrolytes reformed and plugged into preamp and amp the one station it will pick up sounds excellent now to find out why the other bands are quiet (lots of bright red hunts?)

Have now changed all the red hunts both 0.4uf in the agc line were causing problems one being that radio 4 LW could only be recived without the aerial the magic eye did not move so I thought I still had a problem with the AGC but a meter showed it was changing fro -09 volt to -9 volt the problem turned out to be R19 470k was open circuit, the only resistor found to be out of tolerance
now works very well

I see the narrow band filter is both IF and AF?

yes it alters the treble response for those who think AM is incapable of good bass and treble you really should listen to one of these.

The tuned AF filter looks like a bridged T filter, similar to the higher frequency ones used in the old TV's in the IF strip.
