The weather has brightened up a bit this last few days - even Col isn't complaining - so I took the opportunity to do a bit of Heavy Engineering. The 'Warm end' of the Garage, with Heater, is just about compatible with life, but nothing too delicate.
So.......
I have to admit that I didn't know that Marconi made 'scopes, and I'm pretty sure I've never used one. I spotted this one last year on eBay and got it at a reasonable price, including going to get it from near Cambridge. The owner had bought it hoping to use it for a bit of home Development, but it wasn't to be.
Externally it looked OK. Most of the Controls were a bit stiff, but did rotate. A Manual was provided by the esteemed Bill Nichols, wme_Bill on the other Forum. Internally it wasn't quite so good. Two of the HT Fuses were blown and a valve - EF80 which should have been 6BW7 - was (physically) broken. The reason for the Fuse failures was pretty obvious; the main smoothing Electrolytics were long past their best. However, applying Power from my Variac ran the Fan and all the Heaters came to life so there was hope.
That was last year. In the intervening period I bought a 6BW7, Electrolytics and fuses. The only real problem was that 3 of the replacement Electrolytics were much smaller than the originals, so it was necessary to make some simple Nylon collars to make them fit the clamps - Turn, Drill, Part, Saw. In fact getting the old ones out and installing the new ones was much more difficult than making the collars. All the Recifier Diodes that I could find measured OK so time to give it a try. Running it up on the Variac was much as before, and the Fuses didn't blow which is always a good sign. However, there was no HT, and the Thermal Delay Switch and Relay - see below - didn't operate. A bit of poking about and Switch Cleaner showed that there was 6.3v in the right places and the TDS had a Heater. Oh dear. Consultation of the Data showed that the Delay should be 1 - 1.5 Minutes, so I simply hadn't been waiting long enough. Switch on again, grit teeth and count. Sure enough, after about 1 Minute 20 Seconds it clicked in and there was HT.
There was no trace, but a few quick measurements showed that the supplies were all over the place, so there's some fettling to be done in the PSU area. But overall a good start.
