Ferguson 204T

Hello all, this is going to be my first TV restoration, I purchased this from Jon Evans at the last NVCF meeting, this is exact set as shown on his website.

This will be the first attempt at restoration of a TV, so be gentle with me, the first thing I need is if some kind soul has the service sheets as it is not in the R & TVS books that I have, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could let me have a set of them.

Also is their any hidden or stock faults that I should be aware of?, also not sure by the pictures if the ion trap will be servicable, as I understand if not correctly positioned, I may even not get a raster.

I think when I actually start on repairs, this may become quite a big thread due to me being a total numptie as far as TV repairs go, but I am determined to see it through to the bitter end, just got to convince SWMBO that an Aurora is a sound investment.

Good, you've come over to the dark side, where engineers regularly make fun of each other and leave charged capacitors lying about...

Seriously though, snip the capacitor across the mains (Mark will tell you why) and as you are a beginner I'll allow you to wind it up gently on a variac.

On sets like this, the first thing to do is to get 'first light'. Most problems will be in the Power Supply and the timebases. Don't loolk for stock faults as such at this stage as the whole set is about 50 years old.

yes cut out c 115 the mains filter cap if you can reform C116 and C117 (the smothing block) if you dont have a variac a lamp limiter will do but nothing is likley to go bang .

Use a Variac, you do surprise me Steve, honestly at the moment my variac is not wired up, but might attempt to do this by next week, the tv is in the loft at the moment, so I will fetch it down tomorrow, and give it a few days to aclimatise, just to give the LOPT time to dry out.
I was at one point thinking of snipping the mains filter cap, and using a lamp limiter I have two bulbs in mine which are switchable between 100 or 200W but not sure if this is high enough for a tv, or even snip the cap and just plug it in keeping an eye out for distress or smoke.

Will first light be possibly a bit tricky due to the state of the ion trap, but saying that, it does look as it has never been moved, so is probably in the correct position.

be cause of its age i would recomend you check/change the following before aplying mains.
1.c99 the coupling cap to the sound output valve for the same reasons you would do it in a valve radio.
2..c67 the cap that couples the line osc to the line output valve dont want any thing to happen to the lopt.
3.c112 this couples the frame osc to the frame output valve .again to protect the frame output tx
when i did this for a liveing the only time i used a variac was on sets that used 3 leged fuse protectors.
on ac/dc valve sets it was out with the filter cap and plug in.then stand with my hand by the on/off switch.

Thanks Rob, at least I know where to make a start now.
are they similarly rated voltage as I use in my radio repairs (ie 630V) or do I need higher?

for the ones mentioned 630 volt will be fine.
as for the ion trap there are positions on some tubes wher you will not get a raster but mainly the raster will be in the wronge position or patly missing..
if it looks like it has not been disturbed it may pay to mark the position on the neck with a felt tip pen.

Only 129 resistors and 106 capacitors and it's got non-gated vision AGC! I have no idea what that is, well the non-gated bit, but it sounds interesting.

I do like following TV restorations so the very best of luck.
