Thanks Mark; I hope you can arrange something because I now have full permission in writing (email) from Doug to show the DVD transformer method to an audience.
Not only is Doug's 3 phase method unique but if this can be arranged it will be unique for GF forum and the Golborne meeting. My input would be minimal as the DVD explains much better than I ever could.
A big screen and projector would be great but I only have the DVD so anything would be better than nothing. If Ed could kindly explain the theory then the DVD could follow up with practical examples of the transformer in action. I can't bring my transformer because even with three Weetabix I can't lift it and it is hard wired in to the garage.
I'm happy to give it a go and now have the permission to show the DVD.
It's evident that there's a lot of interest in this - a topic that most of us would find more than a little scary, and would shy away from, myself included. It takes someone with Colin's tenacity, determination and pioneering sprit to embark on such a project and see it through to the end, as indeed he did. To be able to show the DVD with Doug's permission, and for Colin to relate his own personal experiences, with a system that he's had in use for some time now will be fascinating, whether or not we may wish to embark on that ourselves. I just don't have the space for any more machinery, but 'Big Al' has some seriously humongous kit which might well benefit from 3-phase! Some of us, including Joe and Alan have seen Colin's system in use, and it's certainly impressive. Were I to embark upon it, I think I'd be too scared to throw the switch in case I plunge the district into darkness! I've no doubt that Colin was relieved when the 'moment of truth' arrived and the system functioned faultlessly!
Ed Dinning has already said he'd be interested in a 3-phase 'teach in session' at Golborne too I believe.
Another month and the nights will be drawing in, so thoughts will soon turn to the Autumn Swapmeet!
Regards, David.

'I'm in my own little world, but I'm happy, and they know me here'
Hi Gents, I'd be happy to oblige; I'm afraid I don't have any presentations on this (or the time at present to put one together), but a white board/ A2 pad will be fine. Make sure you jog my memory in Oct.

This was the sort of welder on wheels that was always around a maintainance shop. It would run on 240 or 440V and had a large handle reminicent of an old tramcar to control the current.
The gasket at the top of the tank has gone and some of the oil has been lost. I should like to top it up without danger of strange reactions.
Thanks, Ed
The oil we worked on was a Shell Diala Grade, available at £500 for 200litres. Not sure of availability in smaller packs.
