Bush VHF64

Time to make a start on something methinks, so decided on the Bush VHF64, so on first impressions, a bit of a mess (just how I like em)

The back is missing, (has anyone a spare by any chance), cabinet needs a total refurb, loads of dust and fluff, the obligatory spider or two, tuning gang seized, EL84 output valve does not look too healthy, but looking forward to doing this one.

Also looks like it is the early version, so may need the hum canceling mod done to it.

I have wanted one of these fine sets for a while, so I will give a shout if I need some advice, did they have any stock faults to look out for?

The usual capacitor problems. The switch bank - Clean and Clean again. Earthing - A short cut was taken on some of these by Bush, so re-do the wiring.

It looks a darn sight cleaner than my VHF61! That works, in a way, on MW as is.

Well I seem to have an extra component that is not listed on the schematic, I presume it is some sort of loading coil,
one end is connected to the chassis tag, the other to one side of the larger coil on the ferrite rod,
It is clear plastic, looks like a silver paper tube inside this, no markings on it anywhere.

Could anyone confirm why this may have been added.

Looks like a cap does that.
where is it in the circuit?

That looks like an unencapsulated Polystyrene Capacitor, typically made by Suflex in days of old.
It should have its value printed on it.

Such things were done by manufacturers and not always listed. Just change those capacitors (I think there are 2 in this set as there are 2 x EL84s) and go for it.

If something ain't broke, don't fix it....!!

Yes, that is what I thought when I bought it last weekend Steve, but it is only single ended, 1x EL84,

I have changed that cap, and a few others, so only thing left now, is to partly reassemble, and see if it sings to me.

looks like c64 0.001mf wax still there also quite a few hunts caps that will need checking sorry to add to your work load

It's definitely a polystyrene cap - they're high stability and often used in tuned circuits such as the front end of radio sets as an alternative to silver mica.

Nice set Paul. Though a bit neglected, it looks unmolested, and the two large speakers, along with the bass and treble tone controls, should gave good quality sound. LMS & VHF too!

Is it the one that was on sale at the Swapmeet? If so, as I recall, it was keenly priced and I was surprised it wasn't snapped up more quickly.
