Hi.
exFAT is for SD & USB drives. A quick format is fine, no real point in doing a full one.

Hi.
If its a Viera then this may help https://youtu.be/QQDaIs8dLh4 Also read the HDD/SSD Has to be formatted to FAT32

exFat for Flash (SD cards or USB stick or really cheap SSD that's the same stuff as in USB sticks/SD cards) more than 32G byte. Spinning disk USB needs FAT32, NTFS , Apple or ext4 depending on application.
NTFS is only for NT unless the device recommends it. My Sony insists on encrypting partition and files. So I don't use it for record as same USB storage can't be used for record and files off tablet/Laptop like photos & video. A €45 set box works better for recording and supports USB (SD card, Flash stick or HDD) in FAT32 with no encryption, though only FTA.

Trevor quite right about the Full Format (took hours
![]() Looked at those cheap Set Top Boxes but reliability seems a problem according to Amazon reviews (I dont buy from there !). Mark its a Panasonic TX-55GZ950B and I got that right as its a great TV: under a year old. Have noticed that there are 3 USB skts one 5V at 900mA and 2 at 5V 500mA. Been using the first one. Might give Panasonic an E-mail. Only need it so my wife can record Jewellery Maker Demos. That used to be OK as the channel was on Virgin and she could do it on their TIVO box. But JM have come off Virgin, money maybe, and so she has to use Freeview to watch. Just looked at the Panasonic video and its what I have been doing but never get to the end. Always the msg "No device for TV recording". Notice his drive is USB 2 whereas mine is 3? thanks Gary

Looks like you're doing the right thing by using USB 1 (the one on the side). It is labelled "HDD", after all.
The manual says to use either USB 1 or 2. Not sure why USB 3 isn't recommended. So perhaps it wouldn't hurt to try USB 2, just in case. I did wonder about the USB version. The specs say there are two version 2.0 ports and one version 3.0, but I haven't been able to find out which is which. USB 1 has a higher power availability, which might or might not be an indication. But given there's only one version 3.0, but you can use one of two of the USB ports, that's probably not relevant either way. USB 3.0 devices should be backward-compatible with version 2.0 interfaces, assuming everything else is also compatible. Certainly, I've yet to encounter any USB issues caused by that - I have very few version 3.0 ports, but lots of devices that are version 3.0, but they all work fine in my various devices with version 2.0 ports. (it's unfortunate that we've got 2 versions of USB interface, and 3 USB sockets on the TV. To differentiate between them, I've used "USB n" to refer to sockets on your TV, and "version 2.0" or "version 3.0" to refer to the USB standard. Anything we can do to be clear about this will help) Watching the video, I note that it's a different set, where USB 3 is the one labelled "HDD". I also note that it is a version 3.0 socket - the blue plastic is the giveaway, though this isn't 100% reliable an indication IME. If you can look from the right angle, you can usually see the extra contacts that version 3.0 has... As with your set, the "HDD" socket is the one with the increased current capability, which should render a USB hub unnecessary, and perhaps implies that USB 1 is the version 3.0 socket on yours. There is a fair bit of noise in the forums about Panasonic TVs being fussy about discs and memory sticks - though to be fair, you'd probably get similar results for any brand. Thanks for explaining the scenario, as I was a little curious about that - I haven't bothered to explore the HDD recording options with my TV because I already have a separate twin-tuner PVR that does a much better job than my single-tuner TV could. It's common to encrypt recordings for DRM reasons. Don't suppose there's a firmware update available for the set?

Hi.
These set top boxes can record onto a USB stick or HDD. I have two I use to feed my standards converters for my 405 line TVs. I can try a SSD If you wish. Thanks Mark. The high power one is not marked 2 or 3. But of the other ports one is marked 2 and the other 3.
On that "How to" video it seemed there was no instant record method: you couldnt just be watching and hit a red button. I did do a firmware check and got an "Up to date" msg. Trevor that box of your says: "This device is NOT a Freeview box and therefore may not support services such as the Red Button". Seems to me if it doesnt do Freeview the channel wont be available. I could have been tempted to try one of those £40 set top boxes... Called August on Amazon and about 3 + star and a lot of the negs may not be true or just incompetent. But they are SCART and not USB and I wouldnt want to go back to that antiquated interface. Gary

Hi.
They are not classified as a free view box but is a DVT and HD receiver no red button service though. I'll double check it receives your channel and take a screen shot and also a recording. I use it for the normal channels and 81 talking pictures.

Hello Trevor
Seems I am getting myself confused. The box you indicate doesnt need to receive the Freeview channels: the TV does that. The basic facility she needs is when that channel is on and a demo starts she can press a button and get it recorded. However, it seems there maybe no simple device to do that. If I got a Manhattan box she could and would also be able to set it to record whole programs so it does have benefit. She's worth it... lovely and a great cook which is a wonderful asset during what for us is lockdown ![]() thanks Gary |
