I bought a large job lot of items yesterday and this was hiding under a pile of stuff in a box, looks to me similar in style to some HeathKit Radios I've seen.

Definitely amateur in nature, soldering very poor and have had to resolder a few things just to get any noise out of it at all, mainly transistors etc. No reception is possible currently, the waveband switch on the front produces crackles and the odd squeal etc, occasionally you hear a bit of static. As well as the waveband on the front there's 2 slide switches on the side marked MW at the top of the upper, and VHF at the bottom of the lower, no other markings on them. Again, little is gained by switching these.

Would like to find the identity and possibly a circuit diagram, so I can start to maybe get it working or strip it and re-build it, as I think it will never work reliably in the state it's in.

The internal construction looks similar to that employed in the Roamer series that was supplied by Radio Exchange Co that used that advertised regularly in PW mag.

Yes, looks like a Roamer Ten. I think it was about the only model they produced to promise VHF, and the only one to use the case with the sunrise-style front.

About as far from a Heathkit as you could get, these look like rats' nests whoever builds them. I see what you mean about the style, though, there's a definite resemblance to the UXR-1:

Afraid not - my father put together a Roamer Seven in about 1970, it's possible I still have the information for that somewhere but I'd not know where to start looking. I acquired a Roamer Eight not so many years ago, but without any paperwork. Not much chance with the Ten unless someone who built one has preserved the duplicated instructions.

This picture is the Roamer 8 MK1 still not the same and no VHF. From PW October 1969

Will look through some of my 70's PW and see when the 10 appeared unless Paul knows.

No, I couldn't say for sure: fairly early '70s I imagine.

A post on UKVRR from years ago says that "By April 76, R(adio)E(xchange) were still offering all the radio kits plus more edu-kits. RE wasn't mentioned in the Feb 78 PE."

I don't think they introduced any further kits after the Roamer Ten, and I'm pretty sure it was their most ammbitious offering.

Well spotted Terry.
My 1971 PW's are in the loft so something for another day.
I've been reading 60's US Popular Electronics for a change, quite a few chuckles and a couple of damn good reads too.
