Found some approx 8mm diameter brass rod with 4BA tapped holes in each end. the original piece was about 113mm long so I've cut it to 109mm. Got to resolve how to fit it to the holes in brackets that operate the gang. I may have to cut it a bit shorter so I can insert some 4BA threaded rod and locknut it at each end. Would be much easier if I drilled a hole in the metalwork at each end of the tuner chassis but I'm reluctant to inflict this much violence on it.

Here's my fix. It's not perfect but I think it will work OK. Could do with some locking compound on the nuts. I chose a spring from my stock and mangled it to fit round the rod.

Nice job Jeffrey.
Better than Thorns original idea with the "U" shaped end of the metal strip bent over and soldered. It gradually parted and all the slop in it caused drift and poor tuning like Lawrence said earlier.

The spring isn't quite right yet but it's more than good enough to test the set.

Almost time to power up the signal circuitry though it really needs the line timebase running to give clamp pulses. Probably tomorrow.

This is getting quite exciting now as powering up time approaches. Interesting reading, thank you Jeffrey.
Regarding the old tuner bar, I had forgotten about them, but now remember scores of customers where the bar on the UHF only tuner had dropped off or come away at one end. At least it was normally a quick service call.

Hi,

The 25" Thorn/BRC 2000 was the first colour television that I repaired, it was a new set on display in the showroom of the shop where I worked and the fault was the transistors on the line timebase panel.  Also in the showroom was an EKCO 25" and they were the first two colour sets that we stocked when colour started in the Midlands.  I think that the price of the 2000 was £ 285 or £ 325.

I followed your link and was stunned at the price, what is the much rarer 19" version in my lock up garage worth ?  I have 3 or 4 panels that I kept for spares to repair mine so if you need any parts then let me know and I will see if I can find them.

First generation 19" sets were much rarer than 25". I suspect they weren't much cheaper and if you could afford colour at all you wanted the big screen.

Dear Jeffrey,

I had to say goodbye to many sets when I left my industrial unit (due to robberies) but the 19" 2000 is one I kept. I went to the annual Radio and TV show the year we started selling them, probably at the Royal Garden Hotel and met the designer of the 2000, he gave me valuable information on how to set it up. The only workshop equipment the firm I worked for had was an AVO8 ! I also have the Radio Rentals sales version (different cabinet) of the 3000 which much be very rare, it was bought by a friend who also worked at Radio Rentals for his parents.

Another that I still have may be the first colour television with full remote control - the controls are operated by small electric motors!

I see that we share a name even if spelt differently and as a child I lived in Oaktree Avenue, Palmers Green, N13. It is a small world.
