I have been given a KEW SNAP 9 clamp on type multi-meter, it works OK an amps range. There are two sockets on the bottom of the meter , one marked V and ohms symbol, the other V only. A third socket on the side of the meter is marked with an ohms symbol and the word lead. On the back is what I think maybe a battery compartment but what I think is Ohms the zero knob is extremely tight and I don't want to damage it. I would appreciate a manual if any one has one as this seems to be a useful tool for motor circuits.Ted

Kew clamp-on meters made by Kyoritsu Ted.

I googled for the manual and several in PDF format in English popped up including the 'Snap 6' but not the Snap 9. It might be close enough to give you a few pointers. You might have better luck than me,  but if not, you could always try an e-mail to Kyoroitsu I guess. 

As a first step, try googling 'Kyoroitsu Kew Snap 9' and see what it throws up.

Hello Alan / David, I have tried Google but got every thing but model 9. Since posting my request for help I managed to remove the knob at the back and much to my surprise no battery space, so how does the Ohms range work I ask. The other three terminals are screwed , the whole thing spells quality and well made. David might make Rufforth one of these warm months, apparently the owner has reduced admission fee down to £2, things must be getting desperate. I might also make Hornsea as a buyer in the Autumn. I booked a table for last October but couldn't make it in the end.Ted

Re Rufforth Ted, and the reduced entry from £4.00 to £2.00, I'm told that at the same time, they've upped the charge to stallholders, so maybe there will be a few more punters, but a few less stalls? I may go in March if the weather is kind. (Don't think I'll have enough stuff to have a table at Hornsea this year).

Good luck with the clamp-on ammeter meter.  Like you, I can't see how it can measure Ohms without a battery, or for that matter, why a user would want to. I've got a clamp-on ammeter which I've never used (an RS one, given to me), so when I return home tomorrow.  I'll have a look at it to see if it's supposed to perform any other functions.

Hello David and other readers. I now have a copy of user manual for the SNAP 9, its the same as Sperry snap 9, I think both were made in Japan, badge engineering. The battery for the ohms range is contained within one of the probes, I'll have to make one. I've found the meter to be quite useful when test a motor. I made a simple but very short extension lead 13 amp plug one end, metal clad socket outlet the other. To use one of these clamp type meters, the clamp should be around just one the active conductors live or neutral, not both. What I've done is to bring out the neutral, which should be at, or very near earth potential via a choc block connector forming an accessible loop. For the loop I've used a piece of single insulated and sheath cable. So, when I want to test a load such as a motor, I plug in the extension to the mains, then the motor to the metal box and clamp the meter around the neutral loop. Much quicker than inserting an ammeter in series. Not a thing you would use every day but handy when you do. Ted

Up date on the KEW SNAP 9. I now have the meter working on all ranges. The Ohms range requires an out board battery holder/probe, the probe and other leads screw into their terminals, not push fit. I had to un solder the small PCB to see the Ohms terminal proper. When the Ohms only lead is connected, the screw in probe which is about25mm long, bridges two sprung loaded connections completing the circuit. This type of meter is ideal for electricians simple to use and rugged. Internally it is well made, vintage 1960 style and repairable. Ted
