Nagra iii in Gallery

Hi All. I,ve posted pictures of my latest acquisition, a Nagra iii tape recorder in the gallery. I,ve lusted after one of these for years, then a friend offers me one! Strange beast though, intended for film sound, not very convenient for music. Beautifully made though. I couldn't find a way to make a "Nagra" section but its under vintage hifi.

A few years back I nearly won a Nagra T. Sadly, I hesitated just long enough to lose it to someone else, someone who almost certainly never uses it. It'll be worth a small fortune now, of course.

I know nothing about this at all (except that I can see it's a R2R machine ) But tell me, please, is 'Nagra' the name of the manufacturer or is that just the model name?

Nagra are professional portable audio recorders - the company is now owned by Kudelski group and based in Switzerland. They were always at the very top end in terms of quality.

Alex Osadzinski, who was in the same 6th form class as me, until recently was their Group Technical Director and then VP Group Strategy and Business Development.

Being picky, "Nagra" is the product name, the manufacturer has always been Kudelski - they were originally designed by Stefan Kudelski who was Polish - "Nagra" is a Polish word for "will record" (or something like that!) - see https://translate.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF-8...l%20Record

It'd be like filing DAC10s & DAC90As under "DAC" rather than "Bush"

This is a funny one. To be the best of my knowledge, all the people I know in the pro-audio world think of "Nagra" as the brand. Same for the high-end hi-fi they make. Let's take a quote from a brochure:

For more than half a century, Nagra has designed and built electronics that are un-paralleled elsewhere. An innovative engineering approach, strict development procedures, manufacturing quality and traditional Swiss finishing: Each Nagra unit represents a new step in audio history.

The Nagra MSA amplifier reflects the Nagra spirit down to the finest detail. Firstly, its aspect: Its compact form finished in beautifully brushed aluminium, the layout of the front panel controls and the modulometer are all typical characteristics of the brand. An indication of a design that is not driven by fashion but by traditions of excellence. A design resulting of the Nagra engineers’ desire to make a concise, ergonomic and timeless piece of electronic, giving to the user as much pleasure years on as the first day.

The first use of "Nagra" certainly defines "Nagra" as the brand to me. But most subsequent uses could be interpreted in either direction. Hmm...

Looking at the FAQ page (http://www.nagraaudio.com/highend/index.php), they certainly do lean more towards "Nagra" as a brand. Questions like "How does Nagra select 845 tubes?", and "Does Nagra recommend a specific loudspeaker brand?" certainly suggest that is the case.

In other words, I'd suggest that it's probably best to stick with your plan to use Nagra as the brand because many people might not have heard of "Kudelski". I'm not sure that I had, if I'm honest, yet I see Nagra gear nearly every day. Shows how attentive I am

Edit: just checked and found that the link to the FAQ doesn't work because of the way they've coded their site. Go to http://www.nagraaudio.com/ and select "High end" on the left, then "FAQ". Also, the company history is summarised on there - I found it by going to "Pro" (rather than "High end"), then "Information". Very interesting.

How many of those pro-audio people know what "Nagra" means? (or even care!). You could argue that calling an amplifier "Nagra" breaches the Trade Descriptions Act (1968) [now the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, 2008] as an amplifier plainly does not record !!
