Hi David, no confusion and consternation caused, it is the original Acos GP61 cartridge which means it is only mono,
but being such a small headshell I think I am rather limited to a sizable replacement, I have a spare SC12H which I might try for size.
Do you know of any other possibilities that might fit?

I'm pretty clueless about stylii. I stand to be corrected, but as I understand it, you shouldn't play stereo records on a monaural stylus as it can damage the record. I don't know if the same applies in reverse - ie, whether a stereo stylus will damage mono records. (but a steero stylus won't play in stereo of course unless the rest of the gear is wired for stereo). I guess it depends on what records you intend to play on it - I can't recall when records became stereo.

I guess you'd need to consult an outfit that sells stylii - it must be a question often asked.

My understanding is that an old mono cartridge will damage stereo records but the later "stereo compatible" ones are OK. A stereo one can play owt.

As for the time of the change, certainly until the late '60s there'd be both mono and stereo versions of records released. I don't know at what point demand for the mono ones became so low for it to not be worth producing them.

a light wheight mono cartridge will play stereo records with no problems to records or sylus the idea of turn over needles was for playing 78's or lp's as i understand it the 78 needle had a larger different shaped tip. so i would not play lp records (mono or stereo) with a 78 needle may damage the record. and dont play 78's with an lp needle may damage the stylus

Well, it is now virtually finished, all it now needs is a few small touch up repairs to the cabinet, the cartridge is a worker,
but has seen better days, so thanks to Rob t, I will be transplanting the Sonotone cartridge when it arrives.

It's turned out nicely again.
