It has several capacitors, including the AF coupler, which are those which look like a cross between resistors and rat-droppings and I was wondering what these are like in terms of reliability?

I haven't done anything to it yet as I'll be otherwise engaged for the next couple of days but it looks in good nick with all the anti-tamper paint intact.

These sets do give a very good account of themselves. The usual changes and then off you go, as it were. The wavechange switch is a weakness though.

these caps sell for lots of money on ebay audio nuts again, as for reliability i had 3 leaky in one set all 0.01mf that said they have a good reputaition

I carried out the threatened plan and was rewarded by silence. I then realised that the aerial is part of the back and on connecting that up it started playing. It seemed a bit quiet but I then realised that it was on 5 Live, a station with which modern radios struggle. A quick twiddle and Absolute was belting out.

I tested the AF coupler and it initially read 1MΩ on the megger but after holding the button in for a few seconds it had dropped to .2MΩ so I'll have its mates out too.

I've so far only tried it with my little analogue meter but that can't find any voltage on the UL41's grid which bodes well.

Is that 5 Live issue just a problem for you in Sheffield? It's one of the louder stations here on both frequencies.

Five Live is a local issue. On a decent radio it's OK in the day but drifts badly after dark even on those.

Talk Sport is even worse. As that uses the old Radio 1 wave-lengths it explains why I never listened to that as a child. Radio Sheffield is on 290m which is too close to 285m for comfort and 275m was always weak.
