i had one of these years ago (early 70s )and regetted getting rid of it so when one came up on Ebay at a reasonable price I decided to get another one. The seller said it sort of worked but took time to warm up - strange as its solid state!
When it arrived i disregarded my own advice and plugged it in, a loud hiss from both speakers told me that the amps were working, so I loaded a tape.
Fast forward and rewind worked fine but no playback (not the pause control) time to remove the top expecting to find the capstan drive belt snapped but no, it was in one piece and I looked as hard as i could nothing was obviously wrong. Time for a look at the manua -l I have one for the 244, now we are getting somewhere!
There was a small belt from the capstan intermediate drive to one of the reel idlers. After disposing of the spare belt and redoing the main belt where it should go - .this was not easy as it involved removing the sub chassis and the tilting arm speed selector - I tried the tape again and it worked remarkably well with hardly any head wear.
The only thing left now is one of the VU meters is stuck halfway and the counter belt is missing.
What I don't understand is why someone designed their own drive system? Removing the sub chassis and speed control is not something to undertake lightly and the person must have had some knowledge.

if its made by hand it can be repaired by hand
