Hi. I would be most grateful if murphyv310 could help me get the same part for my majority Oakington. My set is less than 3 years old and the back light has gone on the display. I have a email stream with majority but they won't help as I didn't register soon enough for the 3 year guarantee they offer. Clearly you have some clout in getting the part sent out. If be delighted if you could help me similarly

Hi.
You'd need to send me the radio for examination in the first instance and a copy of the receipt etc. I had to threaten Majority with consumer rights laws before they relented. The final charge was around £40 plus you'd need to cover return carriage Hope this helps. PS they relented due to the above and as I'm still registered as a business in the repair of Audio, Radio and TV although closed down in reality.

Hello,
I have the same problem with my Oakington. I can play CDs and the radio but there is no display. Mine is older than 3 years. When I open it up I can see the display module has the numbers "jr1602a-01 V2.0" I can Google that and find a number for sale between about £2 and £20. Could I get one of those and swap out the display module? If so, how do I know which one or are they all the same (some look a bit different but if I bought one that looked the same, would that work?) Thanks for you help, Ian

I have been looking on eBay, Amazon Google. From what I can tell is a 1602 Display is the amount of digits and lines. There is no connector on the back and this is what the problem is. The JR 1602 is not recognised. It would be fantastic to find the manufacturer and just order 2. ?

Hi.
Although the original states 1602 it is different to what you can buy online, it may be based on the 1602 but that's as far as it goes. Rather than spend out on something that might not work, speak to Majority in the first instance. Dont accept their non interest and if necessary let them know you will contact trading standards and the Govt bill regarding the "Right to repair" as far as I'm concerned they are a bunch of charlatans. I wouldn't take their products even in a gift, overpriced and very poor quality.

I sort of fixed this. I got one for my old mum & dad off ebay. It was described as so dim it was barely readable and so it turned out, barely readable in the dark! I measured the voltage across A and K (referred to earlier in this thread) and found it varied when the DIM button on the remote was pressed. Measuring A and K wrt gnd I found that A was constant at about 5.2V and K increased from about 2.4V at its brightest when DIM was pressed.
Buzzing out the connector wires I found one was directly connected to K so I cut the wire (3rd from left if the red wire is on the right, I can't figure out how to attach the photos...) and soldered in one resistor and another from the K end of it to gnd (5th wire from left) to make a voltage divider and reduce the voltage at K, effectively increasing the voltage across the LED. Initially I used two 10 ohm resistors to see if it brightened up the LED, which it did but pressing DIM gave the 4 steps of brightness as off, on, on and on. The resistors might also have got hot... I changed the resistors to 100R in line and 330R to GND and now I get dim, less dim, bright enough and the same bright enough. This still won't be readable in direct sunlight but will be placed in a north facing kitchen. Now I just need to put stickers next to the front panel buttons so the old folks know which to press. |
