I used to run a second hand Nissan micra K11 bought cheaply with 80K, that car did 240k until the rust killed it. I then bought a four year old Fusion 1.6 Diesel with 9K on the clock cheaply because it had a little a bit of damage. I still have that car 10 years later now approaching 80K I don't do the milage i used to...
I was advised not to let it go to 9K before a service so the oil and filter is changed every 4.5 K and service every 9K. The car has only needed a rear silencer and a pair of front springs in all that time. I had it waxoyled when it got to 10 years old and that seems to have prevented any rust getting hold.
As an aside I must warn everyone about KYB springs! I had the original springs replaced on the advice of the MOT inspector. they hadn't failed but were rusty and the coating was peeling. I bought a pair of KYB springs from a local motor factor and had them fitted. Two years later one of the 'new' springs failed with a massive bang. By chance I had just pulled onto my drive, the broken spring ripped through the tyre and the collapsed suspension meant the car was stuck fast.
I dread to think what would have happened if this had occurred at speed as I had just been travelling on the A1. The motor factor arranged a meeting with the KYB rep as I wanted the cost of having the car repaired and recovery met. The rep offered me a replacement pair of springs only . He didn't appreciate my concern over what could have happened just saying "Yes but it didn't did it". Understandably I refused his offer of a pair of replacement springs as I wouldn't feel safe driving the car on this make. It wasn't worth taking them to court so I let it go.
The spring clearly had a defect as where it had failed there was a grey mark in the middle of the steel but KYB were having none of it.
I have since researched the problem and found other car owners on line who have had similar problems with KYB springs! Lesson learned!
