I have 4 VHF61s in service or for renovation at present and another with a cracked case. Revamped lots of these and sold them on, damn good sets. Tuning eyes are usually blind and they are full of crumbling Hunts caps. They use the permeability tuned FM tuner head found in all later Bush VHF series, E or U cc85, putting an 88 in livens them up. FM only goes to 100mHz unfortunately.

I don't use Ebay. It's really just a middle man between sales that can be done directly. I can get radios directly but now have way more than I can handle. I can view the stuff I buy before sale and have gotten huge vintage radios for a mere tenner. Without using Ebay. It's scary to have so many radios and no time yet as I work all day on the boats.

To clarify this, I don't think Bush ever used anything else for VHF, did they?

All their Band I only TVs had them as did all their VHF tuners - including the TV53, TV63 & TV75 series sets which appeared  to be equipped with turret tuners.

I can't, in all honesty, recall exactly which was their first FM radio but I can't really see it having anything else than a permeability tuned FM head.

I could, of course be wrong ...

EDIT: The only set that gave any trouble, as far as FM is concerned, was the VTR103 - the AM/FM version of the TR82. Some of these suffered from acoustic feedback as, due to the confines of the cabinet, the tuning cores could vibrate if the volume was turned up. I think there was a modification in the form of a revised tuning core assembly with foam rubber damping pads but I never had to fit one myself so can't be 100% certain.

The Bush VHF 41 was the early tuner with 2 EF80s and that is permeability tuned too, I think you are correct, all Bush FM sets used slugs on string.
It is said that this method lessens thermal drift but they all still do to some extent.

More linear tuning scale, no grotty ganged capacitor shaft contact springs, much reduced chance of microphonics, there may be other advantages.

Well no it is not that at all. It is a market place which brings buyers and sellers together from all across the world.

If you specialised in collecting a particular make of radio then you would never be aware of an extremely rare radio such as this one, being sold halfway across the country, if it were not for Ebay.

Good heavens, I have just had a tot up of what I currently have in my COLLECTION and it comes to about 325 items at an average cost of about £14 each, that surprised even me.
It includes service equipment, tv's, hifi and all my vintage radios and record players etc.
Out of these, more than 191 have been bought off ebay
36 from specialist events, BVWS auctions, NVCF, Audio Jumble etc
20 from bootsales
11 from forum members
and last but not least 3 from Gumtree, the market place for those who have never heard of Ebay.
The rest were either bought new over the years or come from miscellaneous sources.

So you can see with out Ebay I would have lot more room to move around the house, and more room for all the exciting items I would NEVER have the opportunity to buy because I was not aware of them.

So hooray for Ebay (even though I hate the controlling, money grabbing, b's )

Hi.
I have a VHF61 on the bench. One owner from new but went kaput about 10 years ago with and open circuit primary on the output transformer. I've already taken lots of pictures and will post up a full write up in due course.
