Further to post #9 the Neutral lead is definitely connected to chassis, as I fitted a new mains lead. In the process I realised that EAR had used what, today, would be considered strange wiring colours, i.e. Blue between the 'load' side of the on/off switch to the 100 ohm surge limiting resistor inseries with the UY85 Anode, and Black from the 'load' side of the on/off switch and DC Negative. Furthermore, the 'live' lead on the motor winding is Black, whilst the other end, which supplies the valve heaters, is yellow. Even so, I double checked that I'd wired the blue, Neutral, wire of my new mains lead to the 'negative' - i.e. Amp Chassis side of the mains switch, and the brown lead to the motor/surge limiter side.
